Dash Cam - Recommendations.

Options
Hi,

Been thinking about a dash Cam for a while and now after a near miss (thankfully no collision) I have decided to buy one.

Any recommendations and what features to look for/worth having?
Thanks

    I have one of these:
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B019Y2156C/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and think its great. Sits nicely at the top of the windscreen and has a really wide angle - sees almost as much as I do. Records at full HD; supports loop recording so you don't need to worry about manually emptying the card now and again; records date, time and license plate in the video; and as long as your lighter socket (or whatever you plug it into) turns on & off with the engine, then the dash cam will too.
Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

Cheers, will check that one out. Is there any merit in versions with GPS sensors and crash sensor technology etc?
  • I was going to ask the same question so thanks for saving me the job :)
Nothing to see here, move along.

I'm in the same position. I bought a cheapie off ebay (one of the sub-£20 jobs) and I was pleasantly surprised with how well it worked. Excellent for the money. I'm now looking for a better one, so I will be interested to read the replies.

AIUI, loop recording is essential, as you need it to be fit and forget, not messing about clearing the SD card every time you do a long journey. If it has a GPS function it will record your speed and location as well as the images, which might be useful if you ever had to use it to settle a dispute. (Recording your speed works both ways, though! Be careful.) The ones with a crash sensor will, if they detect violent movement, lock the current section of recording so it cannot be overwritten, perhaps 30 sec before and after the knock. Useful if you are in a bump, and if you want to save something manually, you can just tap the unit for the same result.

Check whether your 12V outlet is permanent live or ignition-switched. If it's permanent, you will be unplugging the thing every time you park the car if you don't want it running.

I quite fancy one of these with a rear-facing unit as well, but they are starting to get expensive and I don't much fancy opening up the headlining to do it, so maybe not.

Great reply thanks. my reason is that if my near miss had actually been a collision it would have been their word against mine as no witnesses and no traffic cameras on this stretch of road. I think a camera would be invaluable in this scenario as it could have looked like I had rear ended them when in fact it would have been 100% their fault.

I've I've also got the Rexing V1 from amazon, although I see they have increased the price by £10.

As a dash cam it seems fine, this one also has a g sensor which automatically prevents files from being overwritten, therefore it stays on the micro SD card for insurance or other purposes, although a 32gb card would give you over five hours recording so you have plenty of time to take it home and save it to a PC, even if it did not save the recording

It does not have GPS, but other reviews say it can be a two edged sword regarding speeding in an incident.

you can place the thing at the top of the dash hidden away and then just fit the power cable around the top and side of the car, behind the footwell and into the cigarette lighter, it's fairly easy actually, or you can purchase a Nextbase wiring kit and connect directly to the fuse box, the advantage of the direct connection to the fuse box is it allows permanent power there for you can use things like motion sensor and parking monitor which this particular camera has, although I don't think it's to important

or if you just after simple fit and forget type of dash Cam this is probably one of the better ones. I recommend a decent micro SD card something like 32, Class 10

I have a Black Vue two channel.

Mine has the g sensor and also continues to record for ten minutes after I remove the keys.

I find both of the above give me a lot more confidence when I park the vehicle up.

The 10 minute overlap recording helped get me off a parking ticket recently when I used it to prove the parking warden just issued a ticket without observing the vehicle as they should have done.

I would advise that you look into how easy it is to download and / or view any images you may want as some cameras can be difficult to view / download.

I recommend everyone gets a dash cam asap, as most people will end up buying one after they've had a problem and will thus miss out on an opportunity for the camera to save you money.
