Anglian Windows taking mother in law for a ride

  • Four months later we're no further on with this. To be honest, I've lost track somewhat of the to-ing and fro-ing but the latest development is that an inspector of some description has been out to inspect the windows (while MIL was at work so at most he has seen 2 of the 8 faulty windows and doors) and has submitted a report saying "he would guess [the rust patches forming in supposedly plastic windows] might be due to road pollution". Needless to say, the fitter and Anglian are overjoyed and consider the case closed.

My next suggestions for MIL are to visit Citizens Advice and contact the Anglian CEO directly. She can't afford legal advice. Does anyone have any other suggestions for this? In a nutshell, Anglian have provided faulty windows (UPVC windows and doors shouldn't have rust patches developing!), the fitter has done a bad job. The clear solution seems to be that the whole lot needs replacing but they are repeatedly fobbing off a customer who is feeling pretty powerless.

    Thank you again
  • When you say rust patches are these on the frames or cills of windows are they metal fillings embeded in either of the profiles if so it could be that somebody your installer or earlier has been using an angle grinder near the frames and steel fillings embeded in upvc from cutting metal .
Have you contacted fensa regarding this instalation im sure Anglian are fensa registered
if you think peoples advice is helpfull please take the time to clicking the thank you button it gives great satisfaction

This is unclear. Who was this inspector, who was he employed by? People here will be lost too if you aren't more specific.

What happened about the building inspector or surveyor who your OH had hoped to have visit the site months ago?

You need an expert's report pinpointing the defects and remedial work required. You also need three quotes covering the cost of rectifying the defects listed in the report. How much has your MIL paid Anglian so far and how much more do they want?

I do not understand how you can have rust patches on UPVC windows? A photo might help clarify.
Your OH seems to be clouding the issue focusing on their poor H&S procedures. Why on earth do you want to see risk assessments, scaffolding tags, et al?
Some of the joists which support the roof alongside the sash windows (I'm not a builder, I may have the wrong terms) have been replaced leaving a 6" gap, therefore not supporting the roof at all
This would seem to be a more serious issue? However it is a very strange construction where the windows are supporting the roof? Again a photo might help clarify.

This was on BBC Wales last night it's a low budget Watchdog, I think the bit about Anglia Windows was towards the end. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b08ccx4q/xray-series-16-episode-10

I have a single story garage extension, and the wooden window frame has one course of bricks, then the flat roof timbers resting on top. No lintel or additional timbers to support the roof (that was often accepted practice at the time). Suffice to say, the mortar joints were all cracked as were a couple of the bricks before I replaced the lot with a concrete lintel.

In the main house, the upstairs windows have a large piece of timber supporting the roof trusses. In another thread, the poster also had wooden lintels (and quite a horror story to go with it) - https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5320553
