Buying online from Boots and collecting at the airport (after security)

Hi there. I'd like to buy my sun tan lotion, some other tolietries and water for drinking on board the plane via the Boots website and collect it in the departure lounge (i.e. after security).

The First Choice website says the below about hand luggage
http://www.firstchoice.co.uk/help/luggage/hand-luggage/

************************************

What items are not allowed in my hand luggage?

For security reasons, the following items are strictly prohibited from being carried on board as hand luggage. They will need to be packed away in your checked baggage.
.........
Any liquids in quantities greater than 100ml:

All drinks, including water, soups and syrups
Perfumes, lotions, oils and mascara
Pressurised containers, including shaving foam and spray deodorant
Pastes, including toothpastes
Hair and shower gels
Lip gloss
Any other solutions and items of similar consistency

************************************

This implies that I wouldn't be able to take that sort of thing on board, but then why do locations such as Boots or Duty Free sell such items and liquids over those volumes if they wouldn't be allowed on the plane? Am I right that First Choice are just assuming that the person flying would be trying to bring them through security where they clearly would not be permitted?

I guess I'd like to know where I stand as it would be easier for me to buy online soon and collect these things when I fly.

  • First Choice aren't an airline so it's got nothing to do with them lol. Presuming you're flying with Thomson you'd be better looking at what they say.

Liquid restrictions are down to airport security, and you can't take liquids over 100ml through security, but liquids bought airside are ok.

Why bother ordering online? is there a saving to be made?

I'd just stroll in an buy it when airside, the 100ml restrictions only apply to liquids brought through security, you'll be buying them after security.
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

Yes, a decent saving but also knowing that they will definitely have what you need and if not they notify you when your order arrives in store, which I was going to set to be 3 days before we fly (on past trips I've noted that Boots wouldn't have had our preferred sun tan lotion and some of the toiletries in store). Also water is far cheaper bought from their website and ordering to collect means we can put more clothes in our hold luggage without having to pay more (the sun tan lotion and aftersun we need alone comes to almost 3kg).
  • I just buy suncream when I see the brand I want on offer, and pack it. Just sorted ours out for hol next week and it weighs 4kg, but I know I'll have at least 4 kg free coming back for the things I want to bring home. I seriously couldn't be bothered pre ordering water though!

I only order the water because I may as well get it for half price if ordering the other stuff. The Soltan offers in Boots are the same as online and haven't seen them reduced any further so guess I have nothing to lose there.

You can buy and take on board any size liquids after security. If your only taking hand luggage then fair enough, but if you've got a suitcase you'll get a large choice of suntan lotion much cheaper in stores like b+m, home bargains etc.

What you take 6lbs in suntan lotion & aftersun? How big are these bottles?

400ML Soltans weigh approx 430grams each - we need two each based on past trips to the Carribbean area. Then two 400ml after suns (weighing the same), so that's 2.6 kg. I'm quite fair and my fiancee is extremely fair so we need this amount.

Thanks for the tip-off. Sun tan lotion from cheaper stores is something my fiancee would not entertain and I'd prefer to stick with Soltan on buy one get one half price as I've used it before and am happy with the price.
