You won't get much for the OP's budget in Luton any more. You might get a 2 bed flat but you won't get a house unless it is very run down.0 -
Thanks for your help, that uswitch link is particularly great!
What's so bad about Stevenage though Bluebirdman? I've been many times to visit family, seem's like a great place to start a family, good schools, very green(compared to London at least), absolutely amazing cycling network, Hertfordshire(which is 3rd on the uswitch list)... like I said, the house prices are just slightly out of our range there unfortunately.0 -

A lot of people look down their noses at new towns perhaps because there was a lot of social housing. Stevenage used to have a bad reputation in the 1970s and 80s. But with house prices increasing so much lots of people who wouldn't have considered places like Stevenage and Luton in the past are buying there.0 -
Sometimes it gets bad press, but personally I love Ipswich. Still very affordable. There are some smart towns around it too.

It's worth noting that cultural attitudes may vary more than you think. Some areas value privacy and may seem less welcoming to outsiders/newcomers.
Other areas may value social pleasantries, and may seem more welcoming. Ask around, use social media etc. to find people that have moved where you're considering moving.
If you have family in an area, you may be well set up to put down roots. Is Bedford affordable? MK?There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0
