Extremely generic question I know but me and my fiancee are looking to buy our first home together, currently living in London and definitely can't afford to buy here, even with the various government schemes. I'm able to work from home and she's open to finding new work, so we're pretty much open to anywhere in Great Britain. Somewhere with a good jobs market and 2 bed houses around £150-£180k, proximity to London would be a bonus. We have a family connections in Stevenage and Northampton, the latter looking like the number one possibility at the moment, Stevenage being slightly out of the budget.
Again sorry for the generic question, just wondering if anyone had any ideas, maybe some up and coming towns? :T

I would rather drink Suphuric Acid than live in Stevenage or Northampton, sorry. If you want cheap houses go to the North.0

Norwich.
Houses within your budget, rail links, increasing prices, just been dualled all the way here from London - and all the good things that come with a University City. (and the bad ones) - less than an hour to the seaside, Norfolk Broads on the doorstep......0 -
Have a look at this, it may give you some ideas?

Swindon, still expanding. With the electrification of the railway will be approx 45 mins by train into London. Great road links too, right on the M40

I think we need to know where you live just in case there's even more comedy value in this thread
. As you'll see from my profile I live in Birmingham, which I expect will make your list...
For the OP, Peterborough was featured on BBC Breakfast this morning as a relatively inexpensive place that will be only 40 minutes from London on the train by next year - no idea what it's like though (although it'll surely be better than Luton!).0 -
North East Kent is still relatively affordable. The Medway towns (Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, Strood), all well within an hour of London. Rochester appears to be on the up in places, I wish I had moved there instead of further down that train line.0
