Missed Connecting Flight

My problem was that a flight from Manchester to Chicago via Washington was delayed as the first flight arrived in Washington over 2 hours late which meant i missed the connection to Chicago. The next available flight arrived over 4 hours after the scheduled arrival time.
United refused the claim as the second flight did not originate from within the EU.
I tried the CAA but that was also rejected.
I am now using a claims firm who tell me it's probably correct but there is a test case ongoing. They have nevertheless taken the case.
Anyone got similar experience?

as asked for your duplicate post - what reason did the CAA give for the rejection?
was this because the 2 hour delay was outside the airlines control? - if so, then compensation would not apply0
