Sorry...I'm right mithering you guys today! On my new 'old' xp laptop I'm struggling with outlook express (will deffo try thunderbird & the other one suggested in my other thread but if I can get Outlook runnig quickly will try that 1st).
Follwed exact instructions on Googlemail to set up outlook. Seems to send but when I click 'send 7 receive' to test that it will take an e-mail sent from another pc this is the error- 'the server responded with an error. account 'pop.gmail.com' , Protocol POP3, Server response 'OK gimap ready for requests from 5.65.68.5834mb23309737edy' port 993, secure (SSL): yes, server error 0x800ccc90, error number 0x800ccc90.
Any ideas???? Outlook is fine on my old xp siemans base unit but won't seem to work on laptop which is xp service pack 3.
If it's an easy fix & anyone can advise then great....if not will try thunderbird, etc....By the way which of the alternatives to outlook keeps the same 'outlook style' format?
Again-thanks in advance & sorry for all the questions!Around all day apart from noon to 2pm-any help would be great!

Follow this guide and make sure you set the ports correctly.
I don't expect you'll be paying much attention to your other thread as your issue is now resolved. But I did want to say that perhaps a reinstall might not be such a bad idea. You never know what's been going on the laptop before you had it and updating from Windows XP to a more recent version of Windows might be a wise move.
What is the make and model of the laptop, do you know how much memory (RAM) it has and how big the harddrive is?0 -
Hi! Thanks for that. Compaq Presario c300, 1gb ram, 80gb hard drive. Not that technicaly skilled (!) to do a reinstall & besides it would be quiteexpensive? Will check out the Outlook guide-thanks again!0

Hi! followed exact instructions.....still the following error message 'the message could not be sent because the server rejected the senders e-mail address. the senders e-mail address was 'xxxxx@googlemail.com', subjet 'xxxxxxxx', Account 'imap.gmail.com', server 'smtp.gmail.com', protocol SMTP, Server response: 530 5.7.0, must issue a STARTTLS command first. wc3sm4380081wwjc.47 - gsmtp', port: 25, secure (SSL): No, server error: 530. error number 0x800ccc78'.
Im stumped! Don't really want to use web based gmail as HATE the format!
BTW, do you or anyone know how to create a desktop shortcut from firefox? Easy with internet explorer...can't seem to find it on firefox?0 -
The cause is almost certainly because of a wrong port number, as shown in the error message you posted.
Regarding creating a Firefox shortcut on your desktop, you can use your right mouse button (instead of left) to drag and drop an icon from the Start menu to your desktop and a menu will pop up giving you the option to create a shortcut.0 -
Peruse this thread from start to finish..0

A quick look on eBay reveals new batteries are avaiable for under £20. I wouldn't expect any warranty to cover an old battery.
Again, the issue with Internet Explorer could be to do with age. As I said previously, you don't know what's been installed on the machine previously, or who has done what. If the machine has a CD drive, then you could reinstall Windows XP quite easily. If it has a DVD drive, you could install Windows 7 or above.0 -
