I didn't expect a full analysis of the oil - merely a level would have sufficed - which, presumably would only have had any truth when cold - because once moving, the oil level would have been "all over the place" - but on previous (70's, 80's, 90's cars - would have been the only way to measure oil "condition")
So you reckon that an oil warning light works purely on mileage / time ??

It appears to be TIME rather than mileage (the car has only done around 4,000 miles in last year) - and the date today is exactly 12 months (to the day), since its last service !

I think facade's point was that the impression given by an "oil condition" light is that it somehow works out what condition the oil is in, rather than basically lighting up to a schedule.

That's true of the vast majority (if not all) service indicator type displays in that they don't actually measure anything except for time and mileage, sometimes with a bit of a correction factor for "type of journeys".

As Mark says, if there is a red light showing it means stop and don't drive until you can make it go out (put some brake fluid in, take the handbrake off, shut the door, fasten the seatbelt, mend the fanbelt etc)
Amber lights mean "get your wallet ready" ;)

Even that's not a hard and fast rule. My 5 series (thankfully not an M :P ) has a red Airbag light which, thanks to dumbo here pulling the instruments for a bulb change without disconnecting the battery, comes on for about 2 minutes at the start of every trip.

The manual is quite clear that it's fine to continue driving with that red light on but you should get it diagnosed as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, reliable reset options for the old ADS system ain't cheap and it's looking like a trip to the Stealer may be the most viable option seeing as none of the indies around here have ADS leads any more :(

I bet that is an Olden Days manual then :D
If the red light is on the airbags won't deploy, and in the event of an accident your passengers will sue you for squillions of pounds in compo, and your insurance will try and wheedle out of paying anything to anybody

You sure it doesn't say to wait until it goes out before driving, and if it doesn't to drive really slowly and carefully directly to BMW? ;)
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

The MSE “Motoring” forum; on planet Earth, with a fully functioning brain.

The link to which you refer works perfectly and displays results, both on my own Macs and my wife’s (I’ve just checked) which has different MSE cookies stored.

If you don’t understand how to use your computer, I suggest you seek advice on MSE’s “Techie” forum or just move on to something else you can master.

This pillock has been disrupting threads on here with some wild fantasy that I am an alias for somebody I’ve never heard of.

My advice to him was heartfelt. :)

To be fair, it doesn't work for me either, and I've spent the last 20+ years working in IT.

For info ... search results (with a search ID) are intended to be unique and work only for the user who created the search ... that's what I've always found here at MSE forums anyway.

    PS - it's 50Twuncle ;)

Very well; if you are all determined to nose into something that really doesn’t concern you personally, click the “Search” button on this page, then the “Advanced Search” button (depending on whether or not you are logged-in). Enter “50Twunckle” in the “User Name” box and “Sosumi” in the ‘Keywords(s)” box. Select “Posts” in the box marked “Show Results as”. Then click on the button marked “Search Now”.

You will then be able to find some samples of what this malevolently fixated buffoon has been posting about me. And where.

(Those such as Fat Walt who have trouble spelling simple words correctly when they are being persistently rude might be better off copy-and-pasting-in, at the appropriate boxes, the names 50Twunkle and Sosumi if they still cannot get it to work.)

And when you’ve all finished goggling at it, I suggest you return to the topic of the thread. I shall. :)
If it doesn't concern anyone apart from yourself and 50Twuncle then why make a forum post, do us all the favour and take it up with him directly!

Even if ops post is all a fantasy then it's still more interesting than this nonsense spouted by sosumi.

And for what it's worth the link doesn't work for anybody so you jumping on everybody else because it works for you really has bitten you on the backside.

If you’ve spent your life since 2011 making 12,442 postings on a website, you should perhaps ask yourself whether you’ve spent too much time sitting on your own backside instead of getting a life. What you post, and the manner in which you do it, suggests that you should. :p

What and then miss out on humerous idiots like you coming and going with idiotic posts. No thanks.
