The lights are colour coded, Amber means advisory, red means stop.
I do Contracts, all day every day.

Yes - I did check the oil level and it was OK
So I asked the Suzuki main dealers - who asked me to send them a photo of the "Amber" light
Which I did - they told me that, despite it clearly saying OIL - It shares it's function with a "Service Indicator" which follows - since the car is 2 years old tomorrow
It, apparently works - either on mileage or age !!
    So it is sorted

Suzuki would have you believe that that is an "oil condition indicator" it glows amber when the engine performs a full spectroscopic analysis of the oil, together with a viscosity and shear test, but it actually comes on as advised when you reach the mileage set at service, or it times out.

You can reset it with a little dance on the brake pedal and playing a tune on the trip buttons, but Suzuki will do it at service anyway.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

That's a massive generalisation. On many cars the 'oil' light is nothing more than an oil pressure light.

On many VAG cars, the oil pressure light can be amber or red as you describe.

However, that is not in any way a standard.

Is this* described in the owner's manual that comes with the vehicle? If yes, is this really just a case of the OP not reading the manual?

    * what that indication lamp actually means

I read the manual (copy https://www.suzuki.co.uk/cars/owners-handbooks/Swift/suzuki-swift-complete.pdf

) page 2-59 - doesn't mention anything other than the light being a standard warning light !!
So - Yes I did read the manual....

I didn't expect a full analysis of the oil - merely a level would have sufficed - which, presumably would only have had any truth when cold - because once moving, the oil level would have been "all over the place" - but on previous (70's, 80's, 90's cars - would have been the only way to measure oil "condition")
So you reckon that an oil warning light works purely on mileage / time ??

The yellow light is an oil CONDITION light. When the oil has been kicking around in the sump for 12 months, or has done loads of miles it is no good, so this light comes on. Says OIL above a spanner. There should be a service distance display on the multifunction display if you mess with the trip buttons.

The red oil can symbol means something is broken, hopefully the switch, or there really is no oil pressure, in which case something will break if you keep running the engine.

As Mark says, if there is a red light showing it means stop and don't drive until you can make it go out (put some brake fluid in, take the handbrake off, shut the door, fasten the seatbelt, mend the fanbelt etc)
Amber lights mean "get your wallet ready" ;)

It appears to be TIME rather than mileage (the car has only done around 4,000 miles in last year) - and the date today is exactly 12 months (to the day), since its last service !

    50Twuncle,

Ignore all the advice you have been given thus far.

Superglue a piece of paper on to the display of the warning light and go for a long (at least 100 miles) drive tonight, somewhere extremely remote, ensuring that you rev the engine really hard, to clear any problems.

While doing this, ponder the downside of disrupting threads with constant delusional claims that other users are alter egos of people they have never heard of.

PS. Don't take a torch with you; nothing will go wrong.
What the hell are you on about! Have you lost the plot or something
