    Thanks for the reply.

We have used a spray from Lakeland which seems to have worked (fingers crossed). Also stuffed wardrobes and drawers with moth killers.

I don't think we will go for wool carpets because I would be very upset if they ate a brand new carpet. Not to mention the fact that I'm a knitter with a fortune in yarn sitting upstairs.

It seemed a good time to looks at alternatives and keep an open mind, but I guess a good poly carpet isn't that bad an option. I think the husbands main concern is his beloved sound equipment and spoiling the acoustics in the room. He probably won't admit to that though. :)

In fact the sound equipment is the big problem all round. It's almost impossible to move and it's under there that the little critters set up home.

Carpets are good and comfortable I wouldn't consider anything else in habitted rooms (not the bathroom or kitchen)

You and my husband would get on like a house on fire.

It is a valid opinion and perhaps I should just go with the flow now.

    Thanks everyone.

Well there's no strict "shoes off" policy, so it has been known. We will treat the new carpet with more respect though.

I should have said that the new extension is going to be a dining room off of the lounge with patio doors to the garden. The current patio doors will be removed, so that the new bit is part of the house. Originally we were going to have a Karndean type floor in just the new bit and have new carpet in the lounge. Then we decided that it would flow better with the same flooring all through and decided on carpet. We have no children or pets at home any more and thought we had a reasonable chance of keeping the carpet clean. The moths have made me think again.

I much prefer carpets but have had to opt for non-wool ones since we were attacked by the case-making clothes moth some years ago. The original wool carpet is still down and I have to keep moving furniture to vacuum under it.

There are sprays but not very effective now that the ones that worked are apparently outlawed due to the chemicals they contained. Regular vacuuming and, when an infestation is discovered, occasional use of a steamer works well.

I wasn't being 'snippy' it's just that one episode of moths doesn't mean you can't have carpet again. They can be eradicated and never appear again - I really wouldnt worry about them coming back. Advice was to remove the carpet they are eating straightaway, rather than wait till the work is underway.

Personally (if it helps) I agree with hubby that a relaxing sitting room is far cosier with carpet. I have a sitting area off the kitchen which has a wooden floor with a big rug, and although the rug does help with deadening sound and softening the look of the room, I always feel much more comfortable in the separate lounge, which has proper carpet and curtains.

That's a fair comment and I do see what you mean.

I prefer carpets too, but I might prefer wood to synthetic. Saying all that my daughter has polypropylene carpets and i didn't even realise. We've even seen some that we both like and it has been helpful to get other views.

He refused to even cross the threshold of the oak flooring shop. :rotfl:
  • I would definitely go for hard flooring and rugs, we only have carpets on the stairs. And a spray from Lakeland is probably not going to take care of the moths. We've had a lot of trouble with them, and I really wish we had gone nuclear on them in the first place.
