Hello again all,
I have an ancient XP 38 GB hard-drive computer. Still works but slow so giving to G/F for e-mails etc. My new PC (bargain off ebay-windows 7, 320GB & 4G memory....beats my 2g memory & 38 g hard drive!-only £32 inc deleivery & a 1 year guarantee!).
I have a total of around 29-30gb on the old PC (includes all programmes/folders...etc). Is there a quick & hopefully (!) free way to transfer all this data to new PC?? I'm 'guessing' any programmes I have will need to be re-installed for windows 7 but assume file/folders will still open if transferred to windows 7?
Also...I very much like the set up of outlook express where my e-mails are downloaded...can I transfer this easily to the new pc or download it (couldn't find it online)...I find the interface much easier than web-based e-mail format.
Any help or advice would be great!!!:T

Use the 32-bit version.0

grumpycrab....will that transfer EVERYTHING (including programmes) or just files/folders?0

Windows Easy Transfer XP will probably not work for Win 7. May be better to use PCmover instead.0

Outlook Express does not work with Windows 7, 8, 8.1 or 10 unless you install it as configured for XP.0

Consider Thunderbird for your email. Time to retire Outlook Express.

Unless you have Windows 7 compatible versions of your programmes to install, there is no guarantee that they will still work under Win 7.
If your XP machine has a USB slot, why not copy all your data onto a USB stick, the copy it back onto the new computer, having re-installed your software, which you'll have to do anyway?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. Why do you claim that when the description of "Windows Easy Transfer" states that you can:Windows Easy Transfer XP will probably not work for Win 7.
"Use Windows Easy Transfer to copy your files, photos, music, e-mail, settings, and more from a computer running Windows XP to a computer running Windows 7"?0 -
Hi! Will take on board all suggestions...WOW...what a great forum full of friendly folk! Will deffo look at thunderbird as an Outlook alternative as I hate the layout of web based inbox etc...i.e googlemail, yahoo etc...makes my eyes hurt! Computer arriving today so will update you. Thanks again!0
