Smelly Newf pup.

What are you feeding her?
Unless her diet is awful or she spends her days rolling around or other crap there's no reason why she should stink.
Newfies are rather odorous dogs, at least compared to shorter-haired or drier coated dogs. Their coats are heavy and greasy and need regular brushing to keep the skin in good health -- or they tend to break out in hot spots. Odour reducing sprays and dry baths can help a lot as fully bathing and drying a newfoundland is no joke.
I'm wondering if the OP is paying enough attention to the drooly mouth which can make the front reek if it's not wiped down daily. The ears being heavily-furred and droopy can impair air circulation and raise a powerful stink from ear inflammation. It's worth checking in there to see that it smells nice, isn't red, tender or filled with excess wax. There are good proprietary preparations for keeping the ears clean.
Edited to add: come to think of it, as it's a female pup, have you checked that she's not dribbling urine into her coat? She might benefit from a trim back there too. Perhaps a trip to the groomer with a request to show you how best to keep her sweet-smelling?LBM: June 2023. Amount owed: ~£10,000I've gone debt free before, I can do it again!0 -
i have two Cavaliers and one is and has always been smellier than her 'sister'.
The smell wasnt bad or offensive, its was just more 'doggier' than her 'sister'.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I have two cavaliers and have had four, but notice that, unlike other breeds, they don't smell doggy.
Also, I would think a weekly bath would ruin the special oily coat that newfies have; rather like a regular bath with shampoo would ruin the proofing of a water bird's the feathers.0 -
You could try an antibacterial shampoo from the vets - called Malaseb. I use it twice a week on my girl as she's part Shar-pei and suffers with her skin. Makes her smell entirely neutral, which is nice.0

I have worked out why she was ponging all the time... She was weeing nearish to the back door and then sitting in it!!!!!!
I am working n getting her to pee round the back on the patio - which is where she poops lol. She is obviously too lazy to go round just for a wee.
Anyway, I think it is going to be a struggle to change her habit as she has got used to weeing in that place (most of the time) so I will get some spray and use that in-between washes/trips to the groomer. I've noticed that even on occasions she has wee'd round on the patio, she walks in it all so it is obviously on her feet/leg fur too...
Smelly pup she is!
I'm sure as she gets older she will get better as she is only 5.5 months old. A friend suggested that it may also be a bit of regular newf smell, as in the oils in her fur causing the smell.
Our last dog was a newf x lab and he never smelt like this... Time will tell.Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,
Nothing is going to get better. It's not.0 -
Can you put a flowerpot or something in that spot for a while?Signature removed for peace of mind0

I have been making sure she is weeing round the back now, so not sitting in it all the time and she doesn't smell half as bad! She still smells a bit, but mainly just of dog now.
As other posters have said, some newfs can have a pong about them due to their coats; this I can deal with... it was the really strong smell that was driving me mad lol.
Thanks for all the repliesUnless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,

Brushing daily definitely helps with the smell.
I don't know much about Newfs but I have Alaskan Malamutes so probably quite similar in coats? If they are not brushed daily they have a definite odour about them.
Mine get a full bath probably only once every 3 months0 -
You should take her out , not just let her out, for a wee. Take her to where you want her to go and reward her there when she she has finished.
Having her wee on concrete will lead to a puddle collecting that she will walk in. Can you make a toilet area on sand or earth so that the wee soaks in and there is nothing to walk in?
!!!!!es do tend to go to the same place each tim so once you establish the place she should go there each time.0
