Me too! Maybe MOT testers have their pass/fail rates monitored, I know a lot of it is computer linked, emissions, braking etc. but things like tyre wear close to the legal limit, how close is close? or minor corrosion are very much the opinion of the tester. So maybe they have to put the odd advisory just to prove/show they are checking other bits.
My last MOT has as an advisory "under trays fitted access restricted" no reference number, so not sure what they couldn't check underneath.0 -

Yes I believe that is their main purpose in life, to restrict access of foul objects accessing the underbelly of the vehicle. Perhaps he thought it was a joke like the one about the friction locks that cause the throttle levers to stick on airline gripe sheets.0 -
My car had the same advisories for 5 years - well not strictly true - some of the lightly corroded brake pipes healed themselves over the yearsIf someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0

Not necessarily - I had my car regularly serviced, but would look to eke the last micron out of the tyre tread.

Driving with legal tyres makes you a poor driver? You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose but you can't pick your friend's nose.0 -
Thanks for that link to the Govt MOT check. I've just bought a Ford Focus Diesel Hatchback from the VehicleTradeCentre in Kilmarnock and when I went to pick it up yesterday just before they closed at 6pm. (30/08/16) and they said they would post on the paperwork as their office was closed. I went home by a circuitous route to test the car under different driving conditions and noticed a few bumps and rattles particularly on bad surfaces. Growing suspicious I stumbled on your thread and did the check. There was a recent FAIL even though the MOT wasn't due until 14th September. There was an extensive list of Advisories in addition to the main FAIL reasons. According to the DVLA web site if you present early for an MOT test and it Fails then your CURRENT MOT is cancelled, immediately, automatically. The salesman never mentioned this. I now wonder why they insisted on delivering the car to me in the street outside their compound. Over the past 12 years I have bought 4 cars from these people and always received good service - never again. How do you know when a Salesman is lying, just watch his lips moving, but now you can also add lying by default without moving his lips. Punters Beware!0

It isn't, and the DVLA website says no such thing.

Yes, but we are talking about someone who has taken a car for an MOT with illegal tyres. If they care so little about the state of the car that they are not even keeping it in a legal or safe condition, then I doubt they will be too worried about changing the oil or timing belt on time.
I've been looking for a new car and some of the MOT histories make it pretty clear that the owners don't care about the state of the car as long as it starts.0 -

The difference in stopping distances on a wet road when travelling at 50mph on tyres with 1.6mm of tread and tyres of 3mm tread can be as much as 7.5 metres, a distance that can easily make the difference between getting a bit of a scare or killing someone.
Simply sticking to the letter of the law doesn't automatically make you a good driver.0 -

As i was looking at a used car from a local dealer, which looked good with a 10 month MOT,but when i checked the MOT service checker it had 10 advisories.
I understand they might not need to be done at the next MOT,but if they did i reckon it would have cost over a £1000 to repair.
I also know i would get a copy of the MOT from the dealer but knowing me i would only look at it after i bought the car!!
