My internet signal has been dropping a fair bit lately (its with John Lewis, fastest on offer 18 months ago when we moved into a village). At first though it could be the wifi so plugged my laptop into the router with some Cat5 cable, still dropping all the time. JL on their website say they'll replace a router if its less than a year old, mine isnt. Can anyone recommend a decent replacement i can use please? I currently get 14Mbps at best, which is a pain.
The village is getting super fast fibre early next year, so would a new router be compatible with that when we get it too?
Any advice greatly appreciated

My internet signal drops from time to time , it's the pair to the exchange not my router
Are you 100 per cent sure it's the routerEx forum ambassador

14Mbps on an ADSL line is good - prior to fibre - I used to survive on a max of 4Mbps !!britishboy wrote: »My internet signal has been dropping a fair bit lately (its with John Lewis, fastest on offer 18 months ago when we moved into a village). As for "should you purchase a router, prior to an upgrade" - I would wait - most providers will supply you with a fibre router free of charge, when you upgrade !0 -

Good question, since posting I managed to get through to JL helplne (after a 25 minute wait) who said there was a fault or noise on the line, have reset something and it should be OK now. Its now fine with my laptop plugged into the router with cable, but still not on wifi... Im useless with computers so unsure if this means its the router or not?

Luxory. Have you turned the router off/on. Turn off for 30 seconds before turning on.britishboy wrote: »... I currently get 14Mbps at best,
Then goto http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/ (your internet is provided via Plusnet which uses BT's exchange.)
Click Yes and Begin Test.
Click Further Diagnostics and put your landline number in the top box and click OK when prompted. Tell us the results. IP Profile is the interesting number.0 -
WiFi you may need to set up channels etc .

Personally i would wait for fibre as you will get a new router with any signup .0 -
Dropouts tend to be down to line issues rather than router.
Do an online line check and also check your cabling has not been chewed by a pet0 -

Hi Grumpy, right here goes:
Download: 15.37 Mbps
Max achievable: 21 Mbps
IP Profile: 15.75 Mbps
Upload: 0.96 Mbps
Max achievable: 0.83 Mbps
IP Profile: 0.83 Mbps
Does it make any sense? Since doing the test (it done it before too), it seemed to hang up/drop out even when plugged into the router with Cat5 cable, so much so i coulnt post these results to you. Then i unplugged the cable, went back onto Wifi and ive connection again??0 -
It could also be down to the net you’re having, as in usually you don’t face too much issues with router or at least, I haven’t faced too much issues over it lately and I seriously wish I don’t have to face it in future as well, it’s seriously frustrating!0

Puzzled what does that mean NET as in ??.0 -
Right, spoke to JL Broadband again and the 2nd guy was more helpful. Done several ping texts from Dos prompt (I think) and says fault is most likely the router, which is out of warranty period (knew this anyway). He done an update on it from his end, and i had to reset it, and so far its been OK, fingers crossed it stays that way.
Incidentally, my internet listed on Sky and all my devices is now 'PlusNet' and not 'JohnLewis' like it was previously0
