I would be totally gob smacked if a £15 tent was waterproof. As for being fit for purpose it is if it does not rain.

Stuff like this even if it was £100 you shouldn't be doing S75 from the off anyway, the sale of goods act (and the replacement, which I forget the name of) coves items not fit for purpose - just take back to the shop and ask for a new one or refund, S75 is only needed if the shop refuses to play ball
That is what I was thinking at first
and then though is there anything to say it is not fit for purpose, who says you can not sleep in a wet tent, where dose it say it is a water proof tent
  • The stitching needs to weather. Once its its been wet a few times the stitching swells and seals the holes.

For a £15 tent though you may need to add some seam sealer also.
So are you saying if I left a new tent in the river for a day or so then let it dry out in the sun it would then be water proof?

I think most people would reasonably expect a tent to keep the water out unless if it was specifically advertised otherwise (e.g. a beach shelter type tent) - certainly anything sold for camping I would expect to be waterproof.

What I meant was, section 75 is for problems where the vendor is refusing a refund or some other reason why you can't get the money back, not the first port of call in the event of a problem with a new purchase (the bank would probably expect you to at least try and approach the vendor first of all)

Assuming it is this tent below it is advertised as having " waterproof Hydrostatic Head rating of 1200mm" and offering "reliable protection against the elements" so I would say it was reasonable for the average person to expect that to keep rain out given 99.9% of us won't know what Hydrostatic Head rating means and their most expensive tent (£369) offers a rating of 5000 and a branded one (Mountain Warehouse) comes in at 3x the price (49.99) has the same 1200 rating

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Hydrostatic head is just the water pressure it is supposedly resistant to, there is no defined bs en iso test quoted, so in theory different tests could different standards.

At the end of the day it's £15 on a tent, just take it back and get your money back.

It always used to be recommended to use a flysheet with a single layer tent.
