Soft diet ideas

Hi
Any ideas for a soft diet would be great, so far I have only eaten soup, ice cream and a few noodles.
I tried a couple of hot dogs thinking they are soft but I just couldn't manage them.

Shepherds pie? Cauliflower cheese? Jacket spud (insides only) with cheese, tuna or baked beans.

Or anything, but put through a blender?

    scrambled eggs?
Its not that we have more patience as we grow older, its just that we're too tired to care about all the pointless drama ;)

Thanks for the reply, I tried soup yesterday that had beans in it and couldnt manage the skin on them. I'm guessing the mince in shepards pie wouldn't go down yet but it is an option for a few days time. Love the idea of cauliflower cheese, I can over boil it mushy like Mama used to make :rotfl:

Why did I not think of that? I love scrambled eggs and have some in, I'm going to try that soon. Starving as I only managed to eat 600 calories of food yesterday, need to try to eat more today. Thanks :)

When I had 2 wisdom teeth out years ago for a few weeks the only thing I could manage other than soup was tinned tomatoes on toast, the toast had to be 'soggy' though. I think this plus noodles were the only things my DH could manage after an operation on his tongue a few years back.

Chew, chew, chew! I had a gastric bypass and when I moved on from liquids I had to learn to eat all over again.

    Enjoy your eggs x

If you're eating "odd stuff" because of an operation, you don't want to be putting too much time/effort into it as your heart won't be in it. I'd start with:

    Tinned rice pudding
    Packets of instant semolina
    Packets of instant custard
    Jelly
    Ice cream
Tinned peaches, they're nice and slidey

    For "proper food" I'd try:
Mash, mixed with lots of butter/spread
Tinned mince as that's softer than fresh mince
Tinned spaghetti in tomato sauce - cheap tins can be softer/looser (I bought four for 64p the other week in Lidl)
Scrambled eggs, keeping it loose and adding a lot of butter/spread

    Also soups:
Canned soups, or veggie soups made yourself and then pureed (processor or stick blender). If you've a slow cooker, lob in a random bunch of frozen veg instead of standing and peeling stuff you're not really fancying.

    You could nuke/strain current fruits:
    Blackberries
    Gooseberries
    Plums
    Other soft fruits you like/see
All these with or without that instant custard.

I'd also probably drink milkshakes. I don't usually as there's a lot of calories in a whole carton, but "what the heck" right now, eh!

The scrambled eggs were lovely and went down quite easy with a tonne of butter on them :j

I can chew fine it is the swallowing and it going down that is the problem as I had voice box and trachea surgery yesterday. They said to stay on a soft diet for 72 hours. I'm just glad i'm off sterile water now, that stuff tastes off, give me council pop any day :D

Custard is a good idea, I have a ready made tin in the cupboard and that is quite high calorie also. I think I'll have that later. I need to send OH shopping any way so I'll get him to grab tins of peaches to puree with the custard.

Ice cream is a must, I'll enjoy the excuse for eating it :rotfl:

I've made a batch of yoghurt and I normally make it natural but I've added a tonne of sugar to increase the calories this time, takes 8 hours though.

Home made soup, pack in lentils and cream and blend. You can even put bread in it before blending which thickens it.
Gazpacho is really healthy and cooling.
Fish, poached in milk and added to mashed potatoes.

Mayonnaise, butter and cream added to foods will add calories but also helps food slip down better.

Complan but the soup version always gave me an instant boost when I was in a similar situation to yourself.

I would also recommend not trying to eat three meals per day but having six smaller meals, it's easier to eat and you can pack more nutrition into them.

    Would porridge be too difficult?

You can add protein powder to smoothies, and can also blend in peanut butter or other nut butters for extra calories. As long as you have a good blender to get all the bits out.

Wishing you a speedy recovery from your surgery.
