wait for the MSE collective or switch now?

My MSE EON Collective Sep 15 comes to an end on 1st October this year.

To save going onto a standard tariff I've obviously looked at switching suppliers. Although now their recent announcement of a new collective coming out mid September I'm wondering if I should wait for that.

My query is that if I was to switch to the new collective in mid September (if it's any good that is) is that going to be enough time to switch, in what would be two weeks?

Would I end up being on the standard tariff for a period of time, and therefore be overpaying?

    Hello davenpearsall.

As your current MSE tariff ends on 1 October, you'll be in the Price Protection window. This is open 49 calendar days before the tariff ends until 20 working days after. During this time and provided we're told, we'll keep you on the same prices as now whilst a change of supplier goes through. Exit fees also don't apply when in this window. If you're changing supplier, there's no need to contact us. The new supplier will do this.

You'll still be inside the window when MSE launch their new collective tariff. If you go for this and the account is applied for before the window closes, you'll be protected as above.

Hope this helps davenpearsall. Let me know if you need any more information.

  • Many thanks for the detailed reply.

I hope you (EON) are taking part in the next collective as you have been very good!

You're welcome davenpearsall. Happy to help.

Glad we've been looking after you. Not heard anything about another collective but we're usually told at the same time as everyone else.

I also hope EON will be taking part in the MSE Collective to be announced this September. It does not look hopeful if the EON representative Malc does not know about it unless negotiations are underway in another department. The rates offered in the EON email last week have increased significantly as other posts mentioned, some have already changed supplier.

This isn't unusual icicles. We're never involved until a tariff is released. All the negotiations and arrangements are done much further up the food chain. In fact, it would be more unusual if we were told anything yet. Good to hear you want it to be us though.

I'm also coming to the end of my MSE Eon fix and the quotes I've had from Eon have been so much more than those offered from other competitors. :-(

I'd also like to stay with Eon - but at this rate, unless MSE & Eon come up with something drastically different to what's currently on offer - I'll be jumping ship as well.

How can Eon be so uncompetitive at the moment?

If the Eon representative is about at the moment - how would I go about asking Eon to extend my current rate until I've switched at the start of October?

    Many thanks

    Afternoon sarahh112.

No need to ask us about this. If your current MSE tariff ends at the start of October, I suspect you're in the Price Protection window. This is open 49 calendar days before the tariff ends until 20 working days after. During this time and provided we're told, we'll keep you on the same prices as now whilst a change of supplier goes through. Exit fees also don't apply when in this window. As you're changing supplier, there's no need to contact us. The new supplier will do this. Just make sure you start the switch within the window.

Sorry you're leaving sarahh112 but glad you've been okay previously. Let me know if you need any more details as happy to help.

    sarahh112,

What Malc is not permitted to say to you is this...

Having now boxed yourself into a corner by failing to look at comparison sites other than MSE’s during the last year – several of which offered collective fixes with E.ON at tariffs substantially cheaper than the MSE one with which you have stuck (and all of which would have extended your duration of being on a discounted tariff with E.ON) – you have run out of time and options.

In your current position as a result of this, it would not be a catastrophe to let yourself be shifted by E.ON on to its Standard Variable tariff for a month while you wait to see the outcome of MSE’s forthcoming energy supply auction.

Bear in mind that if the winner of that is indeed E.ON (and there’s no reason to believe that it will be) with a tariff that suits you, your tariff-hop within E.ON would be much quicker, simpler and hassle-free than switching to another supplier, because you already have an E.ON account (and, presumably, a Direct Debit mandate) set up and running. A new supplier would almost certainly want to run a credit check on you, too.

That extra month, although pricey, would also give you the opportunity to consider collective fixes from a number of other comparison sites which will all become available this autumn, turning the cost of it into an expensive but ultimately worthwhile investment in buying yourself the extra time necessary to obtain your best next fix.

(Although your past performance does suggest that you cannot be bothered to look at any comparison sites except MSE's and are thus liable to find yourself boxed in again, at this same time next year. That has been your mistake.)

As you’ve probably discovered over the last year, E.ON is a good supplier to be with, provided that you obtain and refresh its tariffs when they are made available at sensible prices.

Whatever you decide to do, broaden your perspective over the next year and keep an eye on what’s available on collective fixes from comparison sites other than just MSE’s. That will enable you to surf the best fixes, moving from one to another in good time and avoid getting boxed in again!

    Good luck. :)

Hi I'm with you too, surprised not to see a straightforward swop E.On to E.On MSE Option, I must say E.on has been so simple and relatively cheap over the the last 12 month's.
I have made the leap with the same company to E.ON Energy Fixed 2 Year v9 (2 years Frozen tariff ) .
No penalties to leave on dual fuels, and should be advised by E.ON on better deals.
