I was just thinking, if you did manage to make to make a wooden/plastic frame, i wonder would it be neater if you could attach it to your window frame with velcro, then you'll be able to push it on and pull it off quicker.

casper_g yes our old house had deep eaves and we could leave the windows open all the time,

the windows we have now are literately flush with the wall with about a inch eave all round the window frame
The eaves are where the edge of the roof and gutter sticks out above the windows.

Like Casper's mine is 1920s and very deep so I can leave any of the bedroom windows open wide at night and no rain gets in. Yours must be very shallow if you can't leave any open at night even if there's no wind but surely if you fixed them so they were all open a few inches, it would provide ventilation and prevent (much) leakage?

I find leaving all the doors open helps by circulating the air.

Crack the loft hatch too as this will allow the heat to escape and and provide an easy escape for air coming in the window (no build up of internal pressure). This should mean you wont need the window open so wide.

Some form of mesh screen over the opening should stop the rain getting in as water droplets are bigger than the holes in many meshes.
