close our windows when we are expecting or having a rain

Options
any ideas what i can do regarding having to close our windows when we are expecting or having a rain.

we moved into a newly built house '23 year old' council property, about 3 years ago.
the windows are all double glazed with trickle vents, our problem is we cant leave open any of the windows especially at night when its very hot because if it rains, it comes into the house even if its only opened a bit, the same during the day, we have to go round and shut all the windows if it starts raining.
All the windows open side ways 'hope you know what i mean' there is no top window to open which would of been better as the rain would just run off

Change the windows so they open the way you'd like, or just open them a little so you don't get lots of rain in?

Not sure what advice you are looking for really? If rain comes in when the window is open then you need to shut it.

I think what the OP is asking (and it's a perfectly good question !) is does anyone have any simple and cheap solutions to providing ventilation when the weather is hot with rain predicted ?

This is not easy when the windows are either sash or side hinged - and replacing them is rather an overkill solution for the half a dozen nights a year this happens.

For what it is worth, our bedroom window has one side opening pane and a small top hinged pane above a fixed one. A fairly standard set-up. The top hinged window doesn't really provide enough ventilation on a hot night.

And I haven't come up with a simple way of having the side window open whilst keeping the rain out either - though can sort of envisage something involving plastic at the top and fin(ish) netting on the side ...

I think it's going to be a difficult problem to resolve. If you're any good at Diy could you make some sort of lourve (spl) sash out of clear plastic. ???????

If i was doing it, i don't think i'd try to make something curved like that fella has. I think it would be easier to cut plastic into strips and make a sort of venetian blind in a simple wooden frame and some sort of clips to attach to the window that could be quickly removed.

We moved into a 1920s house with rather deep eaves, and I wondered what the point was. Now I know, as we can leave the windows open in even the heaviest rain and it's not a problem unless there's a strong wind driving the rain in.

I'm afraid I'm not sure this helps you though, unless you simply have the roof rebuilt, with deeper eaves....

    Thankyou all
JP08, will see if i can make something in the link you posted SailorSam

casper_g yes our old house had deep eaves and we could leave the windows open all the time,

the windows we have now are literately flush with the wall with about a inch eave all round the window frame

I would have thought a fine mesh bug screen as often seen in yer foreign countries might be quite effective against light to moderate rain.

We place old towels or absorbent cloths on the inner window sill when we want to keep the window open but rain is expected.
