My Thrifty Ways to Save Money

Well I had my motor renewal notice this morning £550, road tax due - Would be around £120 and my car would have been due a service this month. So I reckon a saving this month of around £1k.
That's a lot of money and I would be hard pressed to spend £1k on £5 taxi rides........
I think I shall definitely be embracing a car free life.0 -

This is worth a look:

Since reading it I've decided that after this car, we will go carless too. We live in a big town with good links, right by a station that takes us to Marylebone in 22 mins and about 10 mins walk from every shop we can ever need. I'll be replacing my stupid, stupid £40k 4X4 with a bike and trailer, trying to find a job in my town (not viable now which is a long story) and saving myself £10k a year in tax, insurance, fuel, maintenance and depreciation...not to mention 1h30 a day commuting...which is 390 hours or over two weeks a year. Madness
We are still considering a little run around for weekends etc, but I can't seem to make the numbers stack up against taxis/public transport or hiring a car...plus we'd have no worries about it not starting one day because we use it so little.
Easy for us to do, as we're 25, able bodied and have no excuse not to cycle everywhere. I appreciate that's not the same for everyone.0 -
I'm a great fan of Mr Money Moustache too. :rotfl:
If you gave discovered him when you are only 25 then you should do well.0 -
Morning Everyone.
I have to spend money today. Not in a joyful way as it is a visit to the dentist. I am hoping it will only be level 1 payment which is about £22.
I have a loose tooth at the bottom at the front of my mouth. I am dreading loosing it and will definitely being having a false tooth if it has to come out.
My OH pays into a plan which pays us back half/nearly half of costs to dentist. The plan also covers others health care costs too.
Have a good day.

I too have to go and get some shopping today but as its the first time since 26th August I am quite pleased I haven't a great deal to buy so I am only getting essential things that I have run out of, fingers crossed I will be there and back very quickly as I am not one to wander aimlessly around the shops.I like to be in ,served and on the way home in under half an hour
:):) I am away next weekend for a few days so only getting bare necessities

Morning Everyone.
It's Friday:T:T:j:j
Well the visit to the dentist yesterday cost me just over £19. So I will fill in the BHSF from today and claim some of the cost back.
Hopefully an NSD day for me.
Today after work I must tackle my shredding pile.

Morning All,
A horrible wet day here so I shall stay indoors indoors. I shall entertain myself by doing the ironing and listen to my latest 'Showaddywaddy' cd.
I have made £2.80 today from surveys. Yesterday I also got my £10 Argos voucher from another survey.
I opened a small shower gel from the 'Body Shop' yesterday. There shower gels seem expensive but they do last a long time and so they actually work our cheaper, than buying loads cheap ones. I love the different smells they have.
Enjoy your Saturday everyone.I am a Senior Ambassador on the Competitions Time Board and the Old Style MoneySaving Board.

Can only assume it's across all of their stores, but noticed Card Factory are now selling money tins for 99p that you need a can opener to get into.
I have previously tried saving loose change in a sealed pot (old plastic bottle), attempting to keep it sealed until just before Chritsmas, absolutely covering it (and I mean COVERING it) in gaffa tape, but have always given in and opened it before Christmas - there's something about counting money that I love - strange, I know...
Have bought one of these tins and, so far, so good!
Might offer another option to your expensive money saving pot though, ILCJanuary Food Budget: £0/ £500
Saving for our future0 -
I agree that in an urban environment cars are probably a luxury contrary to an MSE lifestyle.
However - I live in what is very much a rural area (population of 'big' town is approx 20,000) and my costs break down as follows -
No car - taxi to bus station (£4 each way - pre metering, it has gone up recently!) =£1840.00 pa / 153.33 pcm. That's just for work related transport - no social or shopping. The bus station is a 35 - 40 min walk but given that I already commute 90 mins each way that's not really an option IMHO.
With car - total costs £1949.50 pa / £162.46 pcm for all motoring costs
The car costs (actual) break down as follows -
Depreciation - nil (12yo car, apparently worth more than I paid for it a year ago - similar model/year/mileage on well known cartrader site at least £1k more than I paid)
Tax - £295 (bit of a petrol head so not a 'green' car)
Insurance - £315
Fuel - £1224
Servicing £85 (and I have 12-15 litres of oil left for the next services: doing your own maintenance saves a fortune)
MOT £30.50
That leaves an annual difference of £109.50 - there's no way that £9.12 pcm / £2.10 pw would realistically cover any additional taxi costs and it's not unreasonable to believe those figures are actually saved with supermarket rather than local convenience store shopping. (Jug of milk in 'big' town 90p, local convenience store £1.22 for just one example)
By my calculations my 4 x 4 is, if not money saving, at worst a net nil.
Dunno.
Different folks, different strokes I suppose.0
