According to my prospective new supplier the switch to them can't take place before 21 days has lapsed from date of entry (not date of conclusion of purchase which was last week). If for any reason I didn't move then the switch wouldn't happen and if I do move I still have the option to cancel it within that time if I want to. Is what they have told me incorrect?
Are you sure 'conclusion' of purchase was last week? Or, as suggested above, was it exchange of contract?
If the sale is concluded, the house is yours and you can set the ball rolling now.
You appear to think that having to register with the existing supplier will cost huge amounts extra. You will be on a more expensive tariff for 3 weeks or so. As no heating is currently needed, you will probably pay a few pounds more than the cheapest tariff.0 -
Out of interest then, if we complete on the 1st, but don't actually move in until the 20th, do we register and read the meter readings on the 20th and they bill from that date?
Or would we have to pay from the date we completed? Or would they charge from the date the old people left/read meters?0 -

You are responsible, and pay, from the 1st. You should read the meters(including water) on that date and confirm they are the same as the closing readings for the outgoing occupant.0 -

I'm not sure what it's called but it was at the point where you have to buy the house even if it burned to the ground according to the solicitor. The money was paid into the solicitor's client account by both parties in advance of the moving date. Scottish law, not sure if that makes a difference or not.
As a matter of interest for others perhaps.. I confirmed with both Scottish Gas and Scottish Power that this switch of provider can be done ahead of moving. Nothing changes for 21 days, if you don't move into the house and give them both the reading when required then it doesn't happen. So energy supply all sorted smoothly, final bill today of £9.48 for 3 weeks gas but had a nightmare with BT, finally connected after more than 3 weeks.
Edit> obviously Scottish Power and Scottish Gas are saying different things to some of the posters above who had said it's not allowed etc. They both assured me it was and I suggest that anyone who is in doubt should check with them.0 -

So if Jeremy Corbyn informs Scottish Gas and Scottish Power that he is moving into 10 Downing Street??0 -

I doubt it makes a difference who or what address it is, as I said above there, if he doesn't move in and doesn't give the meter readings and the person moving out doesn't give the readings then the switch of provider doesn't happen, according to what both SP and SG told me. Remember that the switch doesn't take place for 21 days. They told me that all that happens is that they give you an account number and the account is not activated until after the fact but it can all be set up in advance ready to be activated. Anyway I no longer care as I'm sorted, I even forgive Rubidumb for the rude reply further up the thread, the one with the wee red face symbol whatever that is. Thanks for your input Cardew.
