Moving home, do I need to inform supplier of new home

I am moving home in three days time. The supplier of electricity in the new home is the same as I have at my old home but the supplier of gas is not. I am keeping my current supplier for both electric and gas in the new home. Do I need to inform the gas supplier at the new home that I am moving in and that I won't be using them or do I just read the meter and give the readings to my own supplier?

When you move in you need to register with the existing supplier first giving meter readings. You can then arrange a transfer to use your old supplier.

You need to advise the current supplier in your present home on the day you move out, that you're moving, giving them the meter readings and your new address so they can send you a Final Bill

Even though the Elec supplier in the new home is the same as the old one, you still need to advise them on moving in that you have done so, and give them the Elec meter reading - The same goes for the Gas supplier.

Be aware that although it's the same Elec supplier, it is a different account and they will still immediately put you on an EXPENSIVE Standard tariff, as will the Gas supplier until you either Switch or negotiate better tariffs
  • Thanks folks. I've informed my current supplier that I'm moving out in 3 days time and agreed a tariff for the new place for combined gas and electric. I will read the meter before I leave on Friday (we only have electric in our current home, no gas). I will read the meters of the new premises when I move in on Friday and the previous owner will also read them. I might attempt to register with them in advance so that I would only need to give them the readings and tell them I'm not using them as my supplier when the time comes.

You should not do this. Register with the existing supplier and then initiate a switch to your chosen supplier and get circa £30 cashback. This is a money saving site after all.

You MUST register with the current suppliers to the new home on the day you take it over, pre-arranging a new supplier for the Gas is a NO NO.

The moment you own that dwelling or begin a new lease, you are clocking up a debt with the incumbant supplier even if it's only the Daily Standing Charge
  • I'm not sure I understand that. How much of a debt? I have 21 days to cancel but I'm saving £190 by switching supplier from the current supplier. However I don't really want to cancel, I want both electric and gas from the same company. I can see it's going to be a nightmare just contacting the energy suppliers to give meter readings what with no phone and no internet not to mention no time due to the actual moving from one place to another

Why ask the question and then ignore the advice that you have been given.

You can't switch until you have registered as a customer with the existing supplier, as you are in a deemed contract with them.

You are trying to break the switching process - not surprised that you alwaysgetdone!

The 'nightmare' was the previous system when the occupants of your new property would have the gas and electricity cut off when they vacated(and telephone). You would then have to wait until it was re-connected.

Now you can move in with gas and electricity connected, but are on a legally binding 'deemed contract' with the present suppliers. All you have to do is contact your suppliers in your current property after you move in to the new property. So the current system works for us customers.

I suspect a million or more people a year manage to change properties without experiencing a nightmare.

Your present company cannot arrange taking over supplies in the new house because they(and you) do not have the authority to do so. Your move might not happen for a host of reasons.

Imagine Mr Corbyn ringing his gas/electricity company to tell them he is moving into 10 Downing Street - it might not happen;)
  • Thanks. According to my prospective new supplier the switch to them can't take place before 21 days has lapsed from date of entry (not date of conclusion of purchase which was last week). If for any reason I didn't move then the switch wouldn't happen and if I do move I still have the option to cancel it within that time if I want to. Is what they have told me incorrect?

".....date of entry, (not conclusion of purchase which was last week)"

There seems to be some misunderstandimg here - Conclusion of purchase actually meaning Exchange of contacts?
The point is that the day the purchase money changes hands, the buyer is responsible all the household bills - Elec/Gas/Council Tax/Water etc - It matters not that the buyer chooses not to move in on that date.

    21 Days before Switch ?
When moving in you register with the incumbant supplier, but this registration also involves other parties behind the scenes, and that takes time.
It's all done and dusted when you recieve the 'Welcome Pack' which contains your account number, as soon as you get that you can Switch
