Meter reader's hand-held device
Could I have a wee bit of advice please?
Can anyone tell me who downloads the meter numbers to the hand-held devices? Is it the National Grid or my energy supplier?
I'd a visit late today from the meter reader who let me know the gas meter number was now different on his machine to the meter I have. As I'm retired and at home my meters are usually always read by the guys. The meter here is around 7 years old and its number has always correctly shown on my gas bills. Just puzzled where the change came from and who to contact.

Confirm that both your gas and electric meter numbers matches those shown on your bill.0

Thanks poppellerant. Yes, both gas and electricty bills show the exact numbers on each meter. At least, they did on the last quarterley bills.0

This sounds like a good question for sacsquacco or one of the other meter-reading guys, like meterreadingmonkey, I think I've got that right.
Fira, are you able to access your online account and see if it shows a correct meter reading dated the day this person came to read it? If not, I would be inclined to call your provider and confirm with them that they have the correct meter reading (did you take a note of what it was?) that they sent someone out on that day to obtain it and that they have it logged against your correct meter number.
It is probably just some glitch in the system but the situation does make me wonder if this meter reader was genuine... that is almost certainly my natural paranoia talking. Hope you get this sorted soon.0 -
I ve absolutely no idea who sends the info onto my gizmo they now call a "data collector ". When I see a different meter serial number its because A- the meter has been exchanged or B-I am in the wrong house or flat . .
If the OP s meter matches the number on the account then all is well, its the meter reader who has it wrong and B is a distinct possibility0 -
Hmmm - Maybe an Erroneous Transfer ?
Meter Nos matching on the meter and previous bills, isn't failsafe - The dreaded Erroneous Transfer can happen at any time.
Best to ask the supplier by Email, (so you have a copy), and check the National Register for Gas meters on 0870 608 1524 to see what meter No they have.0 -

Is this a mistake you make often, sacsquacco?0 -

You don't need to contact anyone; it's not your problem. (as you have confirmed the meter number on your bill is correct)
Presumably the only issue you may have is because the meter reader had the incorrect number on his handheld gizmo, he couldn't take a meter reading from you. So you might want to contact your supplier and provide an up to date meter reading yourself0 -

Thank you everyone.
I will contact the supplier today for clarification becasue I can't access my online information with them. That does happen way too often so I don't think it will be connected with this.
Unfortunately these days I now have to use a text phone and this type of thing is a nightmare trying to sort out using those. I will either email or write them an old fashioned letter just to just to find what is happening. I will let you know their response.
Again, thank you.0 -
You are more than welcome, fira. I hope you get everything sorted very soon.
If I may, I would like to thank sacsquacco for his prompt response... sorry I did not realise you are the "meter reading monkey", sir.
