Puzzled by Demon notification

My ISP is Demon,
my eMail is with freeserve which is part of Orange/EE.

The form of my eMail address is xxxx@yyyy.fsnet.co.uk

My incoming server (POP3) is pop3.freeserve.net
My outgoing server (STMP) is post.demon.co.uk

The notification from Demon which I received today states:-

We've been busy reviewing our broadband service. As part of our ongoing upgrades, we’ll no longer be offering free email with our broadband products

……

….Your free Demon email will stop working 30 calendar days from the date of this email. So if you’ve been using it, make sure you have a new email service set up and ready to go. Apart from this, your Demon broadband service will continue as normal.

Does this mean I need to find another provider for my outgoing eMails.

If so does anyone have any suggestions?

I don't want to go through the hassle of changing my eMail address if that can be avoided

Setup a Gmail address and forward your FS email to it?

Or use the Gmail SMTP server?

I'm not sure that message is saying the email servers are being withdrawn ... I'm reading it more as relating to people having Demon email addresses. (Of course the two may be linked).
  • Whilst I am a Demon customer on an SDU / TAM account, I haven't had one of these emails. Does it state if they are withdrawing the customer SMTP server (aka smarthost) that you relay through? If they aren't withdrawing it you need do nothing as you aren't using your demon address to receive mail.

Wouldnt it be best to ask the ISP directly and get it straight from the horses mouth instead of us guessing on here ??

The message does not mention the customer SMTP server.

Here is a link to the notification (Orange/EE actually put it in my spam folder)

If you read the comments in the 2 links I put in post #6 their customer support does not inspire confidence.

From the Orange/EE support page there is this entry:-

    SMTP server (outgoing): smtp.orangehome.co.uk

Is it just a case of putting this in my Outlook eMail settings?

had a reminder from Demon today.

I've configured another smtp server to handle my out going mail so I'll wait to see what happens with Demon.

For anyone with a Demon mail account who hasn't seen the reminder here is a link to it:--

I still have had no communication from Demon, the only email I receive from Vodafone is the monthly invoice for £12 for the SDU.

edit : the invoice says Vodafone, the email comes from a thus.net address and demon.net email addresses appear in a number of places on the invoice!

Blimey, Freeserve? I remember that from the dawn of (internet) time.

It seems to me from the stories linked to that they're switching all the servers off, both incoming and outgoing. I'd be very surprised if it was possible to forward to gmail for instance, because there would be no server collecting the original demon.co.uk email to be forwarded.

Otherwise I don't think they would be talking about transferring to the domain name seller and Microsoft's Office 365/ Exchange to do the email. (Nothing wrong with that, by the way, it just isn't free.)

My advice to the OP would be to quit looking at SMTP/POP server settings and get a new email address pronto, or take advantage of the reduced price to transfer to the domain seller, which lets you keep the email address.

If it was me I'd be forking out for the domain for at least the first year because I'd never be able to tell everyone a new email address (including all the online services who use email as a form of verification) in less than a month. I've had my email for years so have a long list of organisations & people to tell, but Freeserve/ Demon accounts are probably even older so it would be worse.
  • I've had my Demon address for 22 years, moving house would be easier than changing it!
