My wife was a teacher in a big comprehensive for many years and I always found her colleagues to be a very friendly bunch. Perhaps, as it's currently school hols. time, you may not have met your fellow teachers but they could be a big help with such practical matters. Do you already have such contacts?

There are plenty of decent bike shops.
Halfords will sell you a bike-shaped object.
Actually Halfords will sell you a pretty decent bike these days, although you'd may be better off setting it up yourself.

Use Autotrader for your research. You can specify price range and distance from your location (plus diesel/petrol, manual/auto and a lot of other things) and this will give you a good idea of what is available. That would give you more of an idea when you see things in the other places.

I'd agree. A lot of people are dismissive of Halfords bikes, but the ones I have looked at were reasonable for the money. The problem is the staff selling them. You could get some good guys with knowledge and skill (such as my local branch) or a bunch of Saturday kids without a clue.
If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.
