Another vote for buying a banger for as little as possible with as low an insurance group as possible.

    Or a bicycle.

Only 4 miles, bike every time. How early do you travel? I'd have a look at the local bus company's web site to make sure there isn't really a bus available for you but if it is really early and you are planning on cycling don't forget to get some good lights.

Seconded. 4 miles is nothing on a bike.

4 miles? Get a bike. You could get a nice new one, with some waterproofs and lights thrown in, for between £200 and £400. No fuel, no insurance, no tax, and you get fit into the bargain. Taking a relaxed approach, you will do the journey in 20 minutes or so. At the end of your stay, you can sell the bike for probably half of what you paid.

If it's a very hilly route and/or you are unfit, this may be a challenge, but it's worth considering.
If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.
  • I'm not so sure about a bike. Winter in Middlesbourgh can be pretty grim. It might sound like a good idea now but when it's tipping it down with a sharp northeasterly in the middle of January the banger will seem like the wise choice.

I think you just described a typical Middlesborough summer.

I think you meant to say Middlesbrough is pretty grim whatever the season. I can say that as I live 20 miles away.

On a serious note, get a car and explore the wonderful countryside round and about
  • Any suggestions on where to get a decent bike or where to look for a bike?

There are plenty of decent bike shops.
Halfords will sell you a bike-shaped object.
