Caller Display without Caller ID ??

In the course of trying to work out exactly what I'm paying for in my current phone & BBD deal, I've come across an oddity.
My landline phone has always displayed the number of the incoming call (or the name of the caller if they're in the phone's phonebook). But having just checked with my supplier how much that service costs so I can compare with other suppliers, they are adamant that Caller ID is not enabled on my phone line. I didn't think that was possible, I always thought you needed Caller ID in order for the phone to display the incoming number. Is that right ? Or am I lucky enough to have a phone that somehow bypasses the supplier's non-provision of that service ?

No you need it for the phone to display it.
Sky and EE do caller display for free.0 -
It sounds like you've got caller ID, but your provider is not aware and not charging for it.
Their computer says you don't have it, and they're never wrong.;)
If you switch to another provider, you'll probably have to pay for caller ID.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. I'm with Plusnet and using a BT line for fibre and phone. I am able to check the status of my caller display service by dialling *#234#. Whether that will work for your service provider though -?0

Yup, that was the conclusion I came to as well.It sounds like you've got caller ID, but your provider is not aware and not charging for it.

Useful tip that, thank you. It works for me (I'm with Eclipse - aka Kcom - for both phone and BBD), I get a simple message "The caller's identity will be displayed" so I guess that confirms I have the service even though my supplier thinks I haven't. Makes you wonder how they get the billing right if they don't even know what services they are supplying.oldagetraveller wrote: »...
