Pompey, just to go back to basics, have you run an anti-spyware scan and antivirus scan to try to get rid of this?

Yes - have run Spybot & Adaware as well as various other "clean-up" programs. I will try and run antivirus tonight.

You have a virus/trojan that places randomly named (3 letter) executables in your Sys32 folder. If you browse to C:/Windows/System32 you'll probably find a lot more than qug.

Excellent find! I am grateful to you for taking the trouble to find this out

I am slowly working my way through the detailed instructions. At least I know that if this does not resolve the QUG issue, I will have cleaned up my PC!

    Cheers :)

Just to let you know that I think that I have finally resolved my problem!

Thanks to everyone who responded to this thread - I also used the following techie sites:

    https://www.castlecops.com
    https://www.iamnotageek.com

    who were very helpful!

Basically (after years of my neglect) my PC needed a really good clean up. I would recommend reading the MSE FAQ's to get an understanding.

I also got a computer magazine which had a CD of the most common utilities on it. This is particularly useful if your problem is internet related and you cannot download the utilities required!!

It's amazing what you can find on your PC!

    :)
