The repair is normal after forced power-off. This is heading towards a factory restore...(being the next easiest way to get this laptop back to life.)
I've done forced off many times without repair.

Anyway since the repair, cursor has magically appeared!

Will assess general performance and speed shortly

Can I give a special mention to grumpycrab, who messaged to see if I wanted to come to his place to fix my laptop. How very kind and restores my faith in kindness and this forum.
Luckily his earlier advice seems to have worked, but a great gesture all the same.
  • Update

All was ok til this evening but I can't get past the flipping log in screen. I type in my password and the time wheel spins but I can't log in.

I wait and the screen goes to sleep.

When I hit the mouse pad, thr screen is black, but the laptop is on

Tried force shutting the laptop but same thing happens.

God I bloody hate windows and I'm getting a mac once this is sorted.

    I don't have a back up

I think this has happened before but not this long.

How the hell do I sort it?

Shift and f8 doesn't seem to get me to safe mode

I upgraded to win 10 and don't have a disc for it
  • It's probably Anniversary update (well, complete OS upgrade.) Best to leave plugged in to router via ethernet cable while it does its thing... otherwise its recovery time...

If you cannot logon...you need to get to Advanced Startup options (and from there you have various options - Startup repair - revert to previous build - restore to previous point in time-same build) etc. Do you have a boot disk/usb of any sort? You really need one...

Or try this (the whole tutorial is useful).
