I think Harborne is highly over rated. the parking problems are so bad I can't see why people would reasonably choose to live there. Especially not at those prices.

£600k for a four bed semi with half a parking space anyone? And no train station to speak of.

Erdington - on the cross city line. Again a mixed bag but can get something fairly sizeable and in budget on a few nice streets walkable from station. Though likely to be Victorian rather than new build. Any further east on the cross city line will be unaffordable as Sutton Coldfield.

I like Harborne but it is expensive, Moseley is similar. Both areas are well served for buses but not on the train line. So you are limited to buses and as others have said, they are fine except at rush hour. Bournville is quite nice but like a lot of Birmingham, you do need to pick and choose - and some of the areas that have stations are actually quite big areas, not all parts easily accessible by train. There are some nice bits of Northfield but Northfield is vast, even though there is a Northfield station, a lot of the area is mikes away from that.

Previous poster has suggested Erdington, which I quite like but the new builds near Chester Road station are quite pricy, and I haven't spotted much other building activity recently.

I like the south side of Birmingham, but my family prefers the north side so m looking in the north. I need good transport links as I use public transport for work.
I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back

But she wouldn't know as well as me, because she's admitted she wouldn't live there and I do! Like pretty much everywhere Northfield has some good areas and some not so good areas, personally I think much of it's reputation comes from the past and in general it's pretty good now.

I looked all over the south side of the city when I was house hunting and Harborne/Edgbaston/Moseley were all non-starters in the price/size range the OP mentions, and of the areas that did have houses in that price range the ones in Northfield were clearly the best. You just need to do a bit of homework before making a decision, the same as anywhere.

Well, it's a large area and I can only claim to have been in bits of Northfield, but what I saw didn't look too scary. DD lived there for a year and found no problems.

She's also lived in Harborne, Selly Oak and Stirchley. Her Selly place was 'orrible, but the area seemed safe enough.

DD bought an Edwardian house in Moseley in 2014, well under the price mentioned in the OP. Only two beds, but big ones, and room to go up or out. She needed to put in a kitchen and replace the bathroom and a ceiling/wall or two, so I'd guess it ended up around that price.

Link not working - but just search Bromsgrove station on rightmove, max budget £170,000 and minimum 2 bdrooms. At least 20 properties within a mile of the station and all in budget.

7 miles from Birmingham is the estate with this house on. It is right on the edge of the countryside and it is a lovely place to live as I live here (not in this house lol). There's others for sale here too if you want to look. Neighbourhood is good and we have a strong community with good neighbours.

  • Sorry forgot train station, there is Northfield station but might need to drive to there (there is parking).
  • Contrary to the other posts, Northfield has some lovely areas as does Rubery. We are fussy where we live but again budget dictates and we wanted a nice new build-ish house. We live in Northfield and where we are is lovely. We have access to all the new places in Longbridge- shops restaurants etc and the entertainment part of Rubery. Look at Rubery too as there's some lovely parts there. Like I said above though, where we are is absolutely lovely - overlooking the country, access to the city and a great community here where we all look out for each other.
That house is spot on budget and 3 beds too.

I know everyone laughs at at , but....15 miles from Central Birmingham, direct trains every few minutes, house prices reasonable:

I would recommend the Oxley ones, new development, good bus route to Wolverhampton City Centre, then train or tram to Birmingham New Street.
