A good place to buy 10-15 miles outside Central Birmingham near to a station

Hi All,

Thanks in advance if anyone can help me.

My son and my DIL rent in Central Birmingham. Both have jobs 10mins walk away.

They now want to purchase their own home.

Preferably a new build or newish build with 3 bedrooms.

We are wanting ideas where good places would be to start looking. They don't have a car so need to be in walking distance to a train station prefably or otherwise good transport links/bus.

We don't know Birmingham or surrounding areas apart from Central Birmingham.

The max budget is 165k less if possible but I guess nearer to stations will cost more.

It will be their first home and not DIYers! hence thought it was best if it was good just to move in to.

Someone suggested Yardley?
Another estate agent suggested ?Stalebridge and I cant even find this on a map :o

Tough ask...this is the only thing I could find that was walking distance from station, 3 bedrooms, in decent(ish) condition (move in ready at least) and slightly over budget by 5k.

There were some nice houses 1 mile or so from a station, which is walkable of course, but depends how they feel about it. Personally 1 mile walking each way every day especially in the winter would put me off

I would think they were talking about Stourbridge. Plenty of affordable housing within that level of budget (although strict criteria for distance to station may be trickier)

May also want to consider Rowley Regis. It has a station and affordable housing

The trains on the Redditch to New Street line run every 20 mins. I don't know the areas well but is there anything around any of those stations that might suit?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

On that route is redditch itself but is a spread out area so not necessarily within walking distance of train statuion.

Longbridge is undergoing a lot of redevelopment and improvement (old mg rover district) so number of new homes etc going up. Northfield is mixed some bad areas some good ones. Kings Norton / cotteridge has some nice houses in that price range and within walking distance from train station. Selly oak has some new housing developments being built (the oval being one of them) but be careful as some areas of selly oak is student central due to proximity to Birmingham uni, the nursing colleges etc. Bourneville is lovely but as a lot of was by the Cadbury family for employees what goes on market for sale is generally pricey especially the closer you get to Bourneville green.

    Hi
Perry Barr could be an option, ok so not many new builds but great transport links (the main road to the M6 runs through it). The travel wm website will give details of buses, most of Perry Barr is postcode B42 if this helps.
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)

Consider the western side of Coventry. Houses are not so new but there are plenty of 3-bed places within budget. There are two train stations - Tile Hill and Canley - which will get you into B'ham in 22-25 mins.
  • Consider the places on the Wolverhampton to Snow Hill tram route. A tram pass will cost about £50/month so it can be quite a bit cheaper than the train. This for example, 5 mins walk from the tram station, trams every 5-10 minutes, then a 20 minute journey on the tram into Birmingham: property 43871169

Sorry, cant post with links - search the property on rightmove

Ok been through this recently. Originally from Droitwich Spa, work in central brum. Lived in Olton, Solihull for 18 months until we bought. Priced out of Solihull. I'd look at Redditch Bromsgrove, nice areas in both and easily accessible to Birmingham (Bromsgrove > Bham New Street in 30 minutes). Redditch is closer than Bromsgrove and has some nice houses - Bromsgrove, Droitwich and Redditch were our three preferred areas in the end.

Lots of variables in Birmingham itself in terms of good areas hence we looked outside of Brum.
