Is there really any difference in car fuel types?

So I'm a new driver, and all this about different fuels and things is giving me a headache. I hear my family talking about how they use supermarket fuel for no problem, and then I hear from neighbours and friends that supermarket fuel isn't all that amazing and their cars don't like it etc..
When I got my car, it had over half a tank left and I filled it up at BP for nectar points using their normal unleaded petrol, but after so long I did feel my car seeming a little sluggish and slow, and today it got to half, and I filled it up with their premium one as it's supposed to last longer, just to see if it was any better. Coming home it did feel a lot smoother, yet I'm being told it's a waste of money.
I've been reading forums where they're all very mixed..so any advice?

The basic fuel will be the same
The additive package will not be
If driving a DPF equipped diesel I would steer clear of supermarkets
Even more so when you consider cost, supermarket fuel isn't really cheaper round my way. The caveat being that Costco seem to be undercutting everybody at the moment, though that could be because they have just entered the fuel market in my area and are being aggressive with pricing
I personally believe that diesels are a little bit more sensitive to the fuel and additive package.0 -
Local Shell garage used to be same or 1p more than local Asda. since the Shell garage got taken over by a new owner, it is currently 10p more than Asda.0

That seems daft, increasing the price that much will just reduce the amount of punters that come in to buy the real money makers like sandwiches, chocolate and drinks.
Was the Station previously owned by Shell? Or was previously owned by Shell and is now a franchise?0 -

Don't know who used to own it, it had a Shell Shop attached. It is now owned by a franchise who own other brands of garages and they have changed the shop into a Spar.0 -

I would probably avoid it even if it was well priced

I've never noticed the difference between different types of petrol but I'd swear the posh diesel from Shell makes the engine run quieter. I don't have any proof to back this up though.0

Why have you started another thread about this? You started one last week and then disappeared. Try reading the answers to that one instead of starting another pointless debate on fuel.0
