McDonald's - New student discount for NUS Extra holders.

Options
Got my NUS Extra card today and noticed in the back of the booklet that McDonalds has a new student offer for NUS Extra holders only since 1st Sept.

The new offer is:
Grab a Big Mac or McChicken Sandwich with medium fries for only £1.99.
NUS Extra holders only.

The exisiting offer is:
Grab a FREE McFlurry, Hamburger or Cheeseburger with every meal purchased.
With a student ID (Regular NUS and College cards can be used).

http://www.mcdonalds.co.uk/ click 'What's On' then click 'New Student Offer'.

I know that there is already a designated thread for student offers but I thought i'll give this one its own as it will probably be one of the more popular offers!

The new offer seems better value than the old one and less damaging to your health as you don't have to buy four items!

*Extra Extra Value*
The student offer also works in conjunction with the current 'Free CocaCola glass with a large meal' promotion so for £3.70 odd students get five items: Burger, Large Fries, Large Drink, McFlurry and CocaCola glass.
They say you can't put a value on life... but I live it at half price!

i too have the new NUS extra card and also noticed this offer. 3 times now i have tried to take it up and 3 times ive had problems, 2 of which i have not got the offer ans have had to purchase a full priced meal.

take your booklet with you so you can prove this is the offer. though one of the problems i was told that they didnt take the student card at all as they were 'a franchise', god knows what that was all about and im currently in the process of writing to mcd to find out whats cracking off.

also noticed that HMV are no longer accepting the student card unless you still have your HMV student card with it. i had my HMV card taken when i last used it a few weeks back being told, 'you dont need it now you ahve the extra card'. i realise now this was probably total rubbish and just an excuse to not allow the student discount.

so, just use a little caution and be prepared to fight to use your extra card in some places.

This happened to me in Burger King meant to be able to get 10% off but couldn't because it was a franchise. How are we expected to know which stores are franchises they all look the same. If they are going to do different offers in different stores then they should have a clear sign which indicates if a store is a franchise.

Well a franchise is an independant bought/run store running under the general name of the larger parent company - it's quite common and that's why usually any offers advertised will have in small print 'Available at participating stores'. Probably best to check you vouchers do/don't say this before going off on one at staff/head office and wasting yours/their time.

Franchises usually have standards across all stores, student discount is most likely one of these. Check the T&Cs to see if it says 'at participating stores only', if it doesn't I would email McDonalds and complain, this will then fall onto the local manager/owner.

Yes, Subway is a franchise, but it's not McDonalds, different franchises will operate in different ways. With Subway the majority (if not all?) of it's restaurants are franchises, with McD's in the UK however, less than 30% of restaurants are franchised :)
Can't work on an empty stomach? Grab a Big Mac™ or McChicken Sandwich™ with medium fries for ONLY £1.99. Present your NUS Extra card to redeem.

    Terms and Conditions:

Served after 10.30am at participating restaurants only. Cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer. Valid between 1st September 2007 - 31st August 2008

That's off the NUS Extra site, so unless McDonalds adjust their franchise agreement and the offer T&C's accordingly, franchised (or any other for that matter) restaurants can refuse to do the offer - check participation first :)
  • Complain to NUS Extra. The card is an utter shambles anyway. In the instances where discounts work, they are usually available to any student on production of ID, regardless on whether they have spent money of the discount card.
