I did the same thing once and seriously p!ssed of my next door neighbour. I never did it again. Now, I burn my conifer trimmings at a friend's farm, miles away.

My post was a bit tongue in cheek but are the fire brigade not there for prevention too? They do not just cover emergency situations but also clean up etc. and nobody should forget that smoke often kills more people than flames. How would you feel about phoning them if you were an Asthmatic ? ...and an ambulance too......

However I think the police to be a good idea for smoke on a road .....

It is not just a master of nuisance with a fire of that extent with so much smoke. It is a potentially dangerous situation too.

I still like the idea of a hose

Fair points. Perhaps they have a non emergency number for this type of thing?

Not one for a 999 cal IMO.

I agree the police would seem sensible.

Tempting as a hose would be, what's the betting it would be swiftly followed by a claim from the neighbour for water damage, personal injury due to shock, assault et al?

I used to burn any garden rubbish on poor days when I thought that most people were at work and the weather wasn't good enough to hang washing out so that I inconvenienced as few people as possible. I've since been told by a neighbour that garden fires shouldn't be lit until after 7pm. (He got a visit from the Community police after someone complained about his fire during the day.)
Unfortunately I think that people use their gardens differently now, as a place to relax after work, so maybe the regulations should be reviewed? (I was also told that I was allowed to burn only garden rubbish and as long as it was under control i.e.. in a covered incinerator that was ok)
The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

CHeck your local councils websit abut bonfires. Some of them try to limit times when they can or can't be lit, but there is no current law that prohibits bonfires at any time of the night or day.

Think I'd be most surprised/annoyed at it going on until 11.30pm at night.

Noise has to stop before then - by law. I would think it would be all the more the case with a potential safety hazard like a blimmin' great bonfire.

I know that if I had a neighbour daft/selfish enough to do that - I'd feel I had to stay up until I was quite sure it was all over - just in case they presented a risk to my home by their actions.

Commercial premises can fall foul of noise and their licenses but domestic properties/people can only become a nuisance. This has to be an ongoing/regular occurrence. For instance a party on a Saturday night until 2am would not be of concern to anybody, 1 every week may be a nuisance depending on the circumstances, 1 every night would definitely be a nuisance.

Indeed. You can have a fire of any size, whenever you wish. You can only be accused of nuisance, and even then proving it is likely to be a costly process. A fire every week, once a week might but equally might not. Once a month certainly wouldn't.

I'm not really sure what all the fuss is about, was it the bonfire or the fact it was really big?

When i have bonfires I always make sure the neighbors windows, doors are closed and no washing is out. If they are then I knock on the door and tell them and give them time to close them.

This is what most courteous people do. I don't go more than 3 neighbours in each direction though as it'd end up taking ages to get a fire started!
  • What do you do if the weather is so hot that people need their windows open to try and keep the house cool?
