When I lived in Kenya all we had was a borehole well. You know what uranium is, right? It's this thing called nuclear weapons. And other things. Like lots of things are done with uranium. Including some bad things.

When I lived in rural Thailand, at first everyone drew water from their well with a bucket on a long pivoted bamboo pole, counterweighted to make it easier. Not satisfied with the relative convenience of this system, I bought an electric well pump with an automatic pressure switch in Bangkok's Chinatown and installed it with PVC piping to kitchen and bathroom taps. All the neighbors came by to see the novelty of water coming out of a tap when you open it. Later of course, when such pumps became available locally, everybody had one.Evolution, not revolution0

When I stayed at Black Sail youth hostel in the Lake District the washing facilities were an enamel bowl on the table and a jug of cold water. When my father first stayed there the washing facility was the river.0

And then you had to do some cleaning. Happy days!0 -

The first day I actually found mildly amusing to start with. After turning off the water, the hotel "engineer" turned up in his flip flops and started hitting things with a wrench. An hour or so later a couple of guys from the water company turned up and started drilling. Having turned the water back on eventually, I think its fair to assume that the hotel knew the water was going to be turned off again the next day as the same two guys arrived in their van again and turned it off while they carried-on with the work that they obviously hadn't finished the day before.
My annoyance was with the response from TUI. They completely ignored the problem and sent a reply that was clearly picked off a list.
We are sorry to hear that you experienced issues with the water in your room. I know it is frustrating to be left with little or no hot water, at a time when you wish to use the bath or shower. Unfortunately, this is a common problem in many overseas destinations, where the water systems are much less efficient than we are used to here at home.
It is not always possible for the hotel or apartment manager to fix the problem quickly, as the narrow pipes used overseas mean that it is difficult to transport the volume of water required at peak times. The periods before breakfast and dinner each day are normally the times at which the system is under most pressure and this can also have a knock-on effect to the boiler and heating systems.
So I'll ask my question again, what outcome are you looking for? If you're clear what you want you are more likely to get it.0 -
I live in Yorkshire. My water gets turned off if there is a problem too. Never thought to complain about it really. 2 hours is nothing, believe it or not there are still people who live in places where there is no running water permanently. Get over it, i'm sure the people at Thomson had a bit of a giggle at your letter. Surely you agree it's a bit OTT ?0

Hi Gavin, I wasn't hoping to get anything out of it other than an acknowledgement and apology. So I'll ask my question again, what outcome are you looking for? If you're clear what you want you are more likely to get it.
I was meerly pointing out to Thomson that the service their selected hotels provided was below standard. The hotel was half-full, it would have taken them no time at all to just inform their guest of their plans.
What annoyed me was Thomson's ridiculous response about the hot water running out when people want showers.0 -
I reckon if someone turned up outside your house in Yorkshire. Turned the water off in the street and didn't bother to say anything to you, you'd be pretty irritated. Especially the next day when they did the same.I live in Yorkshire. My water gets turned off if there is a problem too. I don't think thats an unusual occurrence (not being told your water's turned off in advance I mean). I don't think you're going to get what you want from your tour operator OP, I don't think its worth pursuing further.0 -
I live in Yorkshire, not long ago, without warning (they didn't bother to say anything) the water went off for over 4 hours . . gagging for a cuppa, had to go buy some bottled water from Lidl.bargainpanda wrote: »I reckon if someone turned up outside your house in Yorkshire. Don't remember anyone being particularly irritated . . .
. . . probably more "perplexed" :rotfl:
people wondering about in flat caps muttering "whats goin' on like? . . .
(that last bit's a lie
