Although I can now confirm that my freezer compartment contains no moving parts (I decided to check after Rainbowgirl posted).

If the amount of food inside the freezer exceeds that specified for it, this could well lead to the fan overheating as it may be working far harder than if the correct weight of food was in there.

I've always been under the impression that more food in a freezer was better for it, as once the food is frozen it stays cold better than air would.

I guess it depends on the design of the freezer ... if there's an internal fan then maybe it needs clear air flow to maintain optimum efficiency, and the freezer being "overloaded" prevents this?

I'm not a refrigeration expert, and I can't be bothered to walk into the kitchen to look, but is there actually a fan inside the freezer compartment? I would have though the moving parts would be outside and if there is ice build up there then in addition to it not being very frost free it also has very poor insulation!

Inside mine there is. It's behind the back panel of the freezer and I can see the top of the blades through a strip at the top of the panel as it has ventilation holes in it. It operates several times a day as part of the frost-free system. If ice builds up on it then the blades can't rotate properly and gradually get more encased in ice until they can't move at all.
