Freezing up Haier 'Frost free' American Fridge freezer

Hi.
Fridge freezer bought in November 2015 from the Co-op. It's started making a terrible noise, so I reported it on 8/9/16. Haier sent an engineer yesterday who said we needed to eat some of the food as it needed defrosting. Unfortunately, due to plans (we already changed them for this appointment and told both the Co-op and Haier this) we won't be able to defrost it and the engineer said if we don't do it now the fan could overheat.

I paid with a credit card and wondered if anyone was successful in making a charge back in this situation. I wanted a frost free fridge freezer (the engineer said most needed defrosting once a year, this i 9 months old) or any other suggestions.

Many thanks

Why can't you defrost it? Do as he suggests and then if it isn't right you might have a chance.
  • Cram the frozen goods into the fridge and set about actively defrosting the freezer. By actively I mean putting bowls/pans/containers of hot water on the shelves and stay with the freezer mopping up and replacing water in bowls as it cools. 2-3 hours later job done.
  • Hi Wealdroam. It's a Haier HRF628DF6 American Style Frost

Surely it would be obvious if it needed defrosting? And even if it did, is that really a reason for it to be making a terrible noise that could result in the fan overheating? I've only defrosted my AEG FF twice in 15 years, once when I was going away for 4 months and turning the electricity off and once when I moved house, it didn't need to be done either time, so a FFFF that needs to be defrosted every year sounds like the first FF is not true.
  • If the amount of food inside the freezer exceeds that specified for it, this could well lead to the fan overheating as it may be working far harder than if the correct weight of food was in there.

I could understand it making a 'terrible noise' if the ice build-up was such that it actually touched the fan blades.

Following on from that, if the fan blades could not turn, or their ability to turn was restricted, then I can foresee the fan motor overheating.

And yes, I too think it would be obvious if the ice formation was this bad. ;)

I'm not a refrigeration expert, and I can't be bothered to walk into the kitchen to look, but is there actually a fan inside the freezer compartment? I would have though the moving parts would be outside and if there is ice build up there then in addition to it not being very frost free it also has very poor insulation!

Yes there is a fan...at least there is in mine. Sometimes if I push stuff in a freezer bag sometimes catches it and it does make a racket and I have to pull all the stuff out and rearrange it.

This happened to my FF a couple of years ago. Dumb teenager left the door ajar overnight and over the next few weeks we heard intermittent, increasingly worsening clunking noises until it stopped working. It was ice build up on the fan blades which had increased to the point where they simply couldn't move. The freezer itself had very minimal amounts of ice build up. Defrosted it fully and its worked fine since.
