Speed limits at roadworks
Near where I live there is a dual carriageway where they are doing work. I say doing work, there are roadworks, im not sure I have seen anyone there for a while.
It is a 40mph zone. Today, they have extended the cones but there is only one 40mph sign up at the beginning, after that there is nothing for the duration of the roadworks which must be a good 2 miles. The national speed limit signs are still up.
I have not been speeding, but I was just curious if I stuck to 40mph and then as soon as I passed a national speed limit sign, went above 40mph, would I be classed as speeding?

There should be a roadworks sign to resume national speed limit at or near the end. If they don't have that, then i think they have missed it out. That I suppose would give grounds to fight a speeding ticket - but is it really worth the bother for 18 seconds it takes to travel that at 40, you would save around 5 0r 6 seconds.0

When I was a kid my dad used to say if I do not understand something, ask....so here I am.
If I could have gone faster I would have, but im not in that much of a rush it is worth getting a ticket over and then trying to argue it on a technicality, life is too short.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. You could have theoretically have fought it if caught. However would the time gained have been worth it? Not withstanding the fact that unless there are automatic cameras you would have lost all that time and more in a police stop. You'd likely have to take it to court to fight it out there...0

2 miles at 60 mph takes 2 minutes.
2 miles at 40 mph takes 3 minutes.
Time saving by travelling at NSL rather than 40 - 1 minute.
I agree it's not worth worrying about, just wondered where your 18 seconds came from.If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0 -
National speed limit is 70mph. Im not sure if that reduces it down or not to 18 seconds, I feel like I am waisting more time on this thread than I would have saved :PI am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. I have some roadworks near me where the 40mph signs are still up but there are 30mph yellow background signs put up for roadworks. I've checked and these yellow signs are only advisory.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

A main dual lane road I use a lot has had temporary speed signs starting at 50 then going down to 30, there are quite a few signs every 200 metres or so, every time I pass there are no workmen just cones on the verge. I slow down to 50 then 30 but most drivers overtake me, some look like they are doing 70. As has been said before not worth the risk to save a minute or two.0

But only if the TRO is in place and correct.0
