Three move number to different family member

I set up a contract with Three for my son which has now run its course.

We want to end that contract and set up a fresh sim only plan in his name and with his address and port the phone number across.

Is the best way to set up a new contract for him first so that is sorted and then ring them to end my contract and move the number across.

Just want to check the easiest order of doing things before having to deal with a mobile company over the photo (nobody's idea of fun).

Afaik you cannot port 3 to 3 you will have to port to a different provider and then port from them back to 3.

  • I would phone Three and ask them how best to go about changing the person billed for the number. It's not an unusual request, it will occur dozens of times a day and they won't want to risk the loss of income by taking a PAC code, porting to another network on PAYG and "maybe" not porting back to them.

The change of account holder is also a lot less bother...
  • As long as the person taking over the sim card has good credit there is no reason why he won't be able to take over the contract. My brother took over one of my contracts on 3 a couple years ago without issue.

Check out which plans are available :

iD and Life mobile are both quite competitive.

If he wants to stay with 3 move the account to his name, otherwise you call up for the PAC as it will be easier.

There are some good deals at the moment (until 1st September) with £50 Amazon voucher and cashback from Quidco or Topcashback. For many these are much cheaper than can be achieved with Retentions/Cancellations.

I would take out the new contract (given the current deals - otherwise wait until near the end of your contract), phone Three for the PAC. Transfer out to another network (Asda are a good option as you don't need to top up), then transfer the number back to his new contract with Three. Takes a few days ad a bit of faffing about, but gets you the best current deal.

Personally, I wouldn't go through the hassle of changing the out of minimum term contract from you to him as you want to negotiate a new SIM only deal anyway and the issue appears to be you just want to keep the number.
