Do remember, as mentioned by Malc above, that the calorific value of domestic gas changes daily and an average over the billing period is used. The figure is between 37.5 and 43.0 for gas transported over the National Grid. If you really want to be sad the values can be downloaded here http://marketinformation.natgrid.co.uk/gas/DataItemExplorer.aspx0

Excellent information molerat. I'm keeping that link. It'll help when answering specific questions about calorific values from both customers and colleagues. Thanks for that. :T

The downside is that legally you can only go back 6 years.
Unlikely that you still have copies of the bills going back 6 years, (Wonderful if you have), and those previous suppliers are likely to shrug off a claim from you by saying they no longer have the records - Don't give up, it's a lie, they have to keep these records for the same 6 years that limit your time to claim
This issue affected me. British Gas thought my meter was a metric one when it is an imperial. one. I was being undercharged and they kept sending engineers out to check my meter. The engineers kept trying to update their system to say that my meter was imperial and not metric, but it never worked. When it did work they tried to charge me for the extra amount. I complained because it was their error and they gave me a refund; however, the refund was for any charges older than 12 months because, according to their ombudsman blah blah, they are still allowed to charge for the past 12 months.
This is one of the reasons I switched suppliers.0
