  • I keep ours in the fridge, it keeps a lot longer and if you allow it to get to room temp before eating it then it's fine. If it's a whole loaf it also slices easier straight from the fridge than out of the breadbin.

  • I keep my HM bread in a bread bin, wrapped in a tea towel and it lasts well for 3 to 4 days.

When I was living alone (violins please!) I used to keep it in the fridge and it did last a lot longer. Now I don't eat any bread though I'll keep a frozed loaf for emergency sarnies/OH!

AFAIK HM bread - better stored in bread bin. Shop bought (esp plastic bagged) bread - better in fridge, if it's warm.

My ma bakes all her bread and would never keep it in the fridge!
  • OK I have a question - if it's not good to keep bread in the fridge, what do folk do who have to make up packed lunches, don't have time to make them in the mornings, so do them the night before and HAVE to leave them in the fridge :confused:(ham sandwiches left at room temperature all night =:eek::eek::eek::eek:)

BTW - I make my own bread and keep it in a cotton bread bag, keeps lovely, but do leave in fridge when made into sandwiches for tomorrows school/work lunch

    good question :)
the bread wouldn't dry out all that much overnight, so chilling the whole sandwich would be the lesser of two 'evils'

imho of course, I always make mine in the morning ;)

interesting link that adouglasmhor posted above, well worth a read
  • I don't, OH does

In fairness, our weekday flat is very hot and bread does seem to 'sweat' and go off quickly if left out. It definitely lasts longer in the fridge.

Unfortunately the butter needs leaving out to ensure it's soft enough to use - that results in cold bread and warm butter (when I'd far rather the opposite).

Bread at home stays out, as does the butter.

I keep my bread in the fridge and have done for years, I found when I kept it in a bread crock it went mouldy after a couple of days and I had to throw it away. I buy 2 sliced loaves a month for toast and we keep them in the freezer, the HM bread I leave out for 12 hours then slice it and put it in a bag in the fridge, we take out the bread we need for a meal. It does soften the crust, but apart from that I really do not think it makes that much difference. Mind you I do think that a warm kitchen can make bread in a bread keeper or bin go mouldy quicker......that has been my experienece anyway............

We don't go through enough bread, so I freeze our into about 4-6 slices and then george heats it up for me.

For those of you who don't know I'm a bit mad (are there really any of you left?!)... the aforementioned george is my george foreman :D

How and ever, I would prefer to keep it in the bread bin. My mum has a great one that keeps bread fresh forever!
