I think you have missed the point! The problem is not logical or technical but desire and prejudice.Get him an AMD RX480 with the Polaris chipset. Excellent value for money and he won't notice the difference
This child really, really, really, wants a  GTX 1080 - nothing else will do...

Well, when I was his age I wanted a pair of converse. And do you know what I got? Hi-tec.
I also wanted a Chopper. And do you know what I got? A Budgie.
I wanted an Atari. And you know what I got? A Commodore 16. That's right... you heard correct. 16... not even a 64.
Life is tough. And the sooner he learns that, the better.0 -

Seems like a good game this....
OK I got Dunlop Green Flash
Then a Tomahawk
Then a Chopper (loved that bike)
Also wanted an Atari, but ended up with a ZX81
The point being....erm.....Yes what you said. Just get him to read reviews of the RX480 and he may convince himself.0 -
I wanted nike and got Troop
I wanted a commodor 64 and got a zx spectrum
I then wanted a Megadrive and got a Master system
I then wanted a commodor Amiga cd32 and the guy convinced my mum and dad in the shop that the CDI was the in thing...yeah there was all of about 3 games for it. Luckily it stopped working 2 weeks in and when it went back the other sales guy said they couldn't replace it as it was discontinued stock lol so ended up with the CD32
I had a Tomahawk (small wheel at the front and big at the back?) or was that the chopper I thought they were the same?0 -
Agree that unless you're going 4k, you'd be better served with a 1070.
At 1080p a 1060 or 480 would be fine.
The important question is: what resolution does he play at?
I don't know but I will find out.
I think he will see sense and go for a lesser model. The budget I had in mind was £300 and my son has said that he will pay the difference. He has also this evening told me he will put his project on hold so that he can concentrate on his A levels. I'd much rather he does this too!0 -

This is the first time my son has requested anything that I regard as unrealistic. All through his life he has been really good and always saved up for his games. I'm quite proud of him in that sense. The only time I ever buy him presents is Christmas and Birthdays - everything else - he always saves up and buys himself.0 -
And me, I wanted a Tiny Tears doll and you know what, I never ever got it :-(0

All I ever got was a lump of coal and a block of wood; and I thought myself lucky!0

I agree with what everyone had said on this so far - chances are your son doesn't need the 1080.
Unless he has a 4k monitor, you'd be better off going for the 1070 or a card from the previous generation. I have an R9 390 (now going for around £250) and it tears through most games, even at 1440p.
If you do decide to buy the 1080, you'd better make it clear that it needs to last a good few years before another upgrade.DMP:

the Tomahawk was the next size down from the chopper - same basic style and great for stunt-riding
...yes, I had one too, the amount of abuse that thing put up with without breaking was unbelievable
......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple
