Why dashcams are so important.

I agree they're important, but they're just so ugly. Stuck to the windscreen with the cable draped down the centre console to be plugged into the 12v. It's the only reason I don't have one. The cable draped down the dash would drive me insane.

Why don't manufacturers fit them in the rear view mirror, for example. It could record constantly onto a hidden hard drive.

The satnav style suction cup mounts are large and ugly, but you can buy tiny mounts now:

Also buy a 5m long cable from eBay and you'll have plenty to route under the headlining, down the door pillar and to the rear of the glovebox and out near the 12v socket if you don't want to hardwire it. Takes 10-15 minutes tops including removing the glovebox!

With no experience at all, I fitted a cam to mine, charge wire goes up around the roof and down the door, under the seat and into the charge point, wires are all tucked away - there is maybe 3" at the top and a bit around the centre console where the charge point is, otherwise all out of sight

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Fit it on the LH side and run the cable down the pillar.

Sounds good, for others doing this for themselves, if you have side impact/curtain airbags above the doors then remember to route the cable where it wont stop them deploying.

Considering an air bag can throw an adult 3-4 ft into the air then I doubt a USB charging cable will be much of an impediment to it

Fee free to wire across the bag then, I won't be.

If I trip over a wire at home it ends up pulling it out of whatever it's connected to. A USB cable tucked into the rubber strips on the outside of the door is not going to stop an airbag deploying in any version of reality

When I had my accident back in 2009, Admiral "lost" the CD with the video footage 6 times, when they got it they couldn't play it (I think they inserted the CD and expected it to just auto play) and they couldn't view it on Youtube because it was blocked on their network and when they finally saw it, they were suspicious of why I was driving around with a dashcam.

    Perhaps things have changed?
