Avios Account Closure - no warning

I just looked at my Avios account to see whether I had enough points for a flight I'm booking and it says my account is going to close on 15th August due to inactivity.

I have been receiving regular personalised marketing emails from them, but none of them have warned me that my account was due to close imminently. The only way I can keep it open is to collect points, but I haven't got time to do that as it takes weeks for points to show on the system

So I decided to spend the points, since I'm going to lose them anyway, and went through the process of booking a hotel stay only to receive a 'booking error'!

Has anyone else had a similar issue and is there anything I can do to either keep or spend these points?

How do you expect to collect points if you don't use the card?

If you don't want to add AVIOS, you can redeem them by telephone: 0844 49 333 99 or 01925 848619
That should bypass the booking error problem.
Open tomorrow from 10am to 4pm.

I think you misunderstood my post - I'm trying to spend the points, not save them. I already have tens of thousands of points.

Thanks ND, I'll call them tomorrow.

If you can't find anything for which you wish to use them, drop me a line tomorrow. Perhaps can use them for an upcoming hotel booking or Eurostar or some such. Some cash will be better than nothing.

36 months inactivity...I think it is up to you to keep an eye on when the 3 years occurs...
You don't have to lose them, an activity will keep them alive for another 3 years

Just buy some - they credit immediately. Tens of thousands isn't very much and maybe not worth worrying about?

A bit presumptuous, don't you think?

Beware the 0844 number is premium rate and will always cost a lot more to call than the geographic 01 number. This is true on every landline and mobile provider. Call the 01 number.
