Can I ask bank to block cash back at till option?

Hi there, very curious if I can ask the bank to block any 'cashback' at supermarket till options without blocking normal ATM usage.
Have done quite a few google searches and can't see anything.
There are good reasons why this would be very useful and of course a call to the bank will be made.
Also does cash back appear on the itemized receipt produced at the supermarket till? Probably an obvious question but have to say it's not an option I've used to date.
Would appreciate any advise from any MSE experts on this. Many thanks in advance

Hi Glen .... is the fastest forum reply I've ever received anywhere!
Many thanks for that. Sorry you mean can't option to block the transaction from the bank side?
I'm wandering if the debit card could be requested without ATM option at all now?
Many thanks for your advice0 -

Yes you cant block it as the bank doesn't see it as a cashback option, only as a purchase from said retailer,
I also doubt you would be able to get ATM's blocked but worth asking I suppose, I would love to know the reason why you would want to do this though0 -
It's not a good reason honestly speaking.
We have a situation where an aledged friend of a disabled relative has been using a debit card to withdraw significant amounts of cash. A lot of cash.
We have through process managed to put the brakes on significant ATM withdrawals and insisted on debit card only and receipts. This has been successful and the amount leeched has dropped dramatically.
However there are still systematic supermarket transactions for modest amounts. My concern is now that only small purchases are being made but it's become a vehicle to obtain cash in smaller amounts.
Sounds very strange and indeed it is but the relationship is one that needs managing rather than what I would do if were down to me and ring a higher authority with three digits higher than 8 and lower than 10!
That's the reason. Again I'm looking to use process rather than confrontation to solve the problem...at this point at least.
Many thanks0 -
Yes of course the receipt will show a cash withdrawal. If it didn't, what would it show as? Its not going to be baked beans instead
Or not there at all, despite a total of say £50 shopping for goods, the total is £100? Or the total shows as £50 but on the bank statement its £100?
Bottom line, as you probably know, you are addressing the symptom with a poor remedy, rather than the cause.0 -
Yes is a point....I guess a trip to Sainsbury tonight and actually try it would be the definitive answer. I've never actually used cash back to the best of recollection but easy to test.
And yes you are right it's gate keeper and a Shepparding solution rather than to move the sheep to another field altogether.
Reasoning is complex and long standing and would take an age to explain but totally agree, it's symptom not cause.
I guess there is an argument to replace the debit card with a credit card without cash withdrawal options? Would that eliminate the option? Thinking out loud...
Thanks for your advice0 -
Everytime I've done it, it says cash back on the receipt.0

Thanks for confirming FutureGirl. Is strange how we tend to think of ourselves as tech savy and up to date but every now and again there's a function that you simply never used. That said you're talking to man who had to ask how to buy a lottery ticket a few weeks back....never did it!
Have to say I cannot remember the last time I used cash for anything. Oh maybe to pay the plasterers ... most likely to avoid something

The best solution would be to advance the friend a sum of cash (since they are being very helpful and shouldn't have to pay for things out of their own pocket). Get the friend to submit receipts before any more cash is advanced and make sure the receipts tally with the amount being spent. You could do this through a prepaid card in the friend's name.0
