Hi
I'm not savvy around credit cards so not sure what's happened but the last 6 months or so I've been using my HSBC credit card more and finding that the £1500 limit is quite restrictive if I purchase a few things in a month (been up to about £1200 in the past 6 months). I always pay off in full every month and this is the only credit card I've ever had, had the card over 5 years now.
There was a one off purchase I was looking to use the card for this month for about £1400 but I already had about £200 on the card so I called HSBC and asked to increase my limit to £2000. They kept me on the phone for about 30 minutes then told me I'd been declined as they were happy with the current limit at which point I hung up as couldn't say what I felt at the time as I was a bit angry. I then calmed down and paid for the purchase with my debit card.
Have I fell into some trap like you're not supposed to ask for credit increase right after Christmas or something? I did move my current account from HSBC to another bank in January last year so felt they might be punishing me for that?
Pic of my credit score details here, will asking for the limit increase and being declined be a big negative mark now if I went to another card provider in the hope of getting a bigger credit limit? I'm happy to wait if so but would like a bigger limit card if possible.0 -
Your score is irrelevant. Ignore it.
HSBC will use their own internal scoring system to determine if you are eligible for an increase.0 -

I'm afraid while we all like to think we're important, it's just not the case.
It's simply a commercial decision.0 -
Maybe try for another card.
my bank who i have banked with perfectly for seven years ,halifax, give me a 20 percent chance of getting a credit card with them. i had one with them and run it 100 % ok but closed it after a few years.
mbna accepted me who Halifax group own.
HSBC gave me large limit.
the Halifax internal score must have been perfect but they must have been basing decisions on info from a cra other than exp. must be what call credit reports to them.if you do it its done0 -
I applied about ten days ago, got the email on Saturday morning with the credit agreement but no card yet so no idea what credit limit I'll get.
Also opened a NW Reward Card as I bank with them already with a Reward Account so going to use it for my supermarket shopping and clear each month - they gave me £49000 -
Got a few myself... HSBC gave me £2000 one then after 3 months it was changed to £5000.
Applied for an AMEX card recently and to my shock a £15,000 Limit...
Is it norm AMEX give high limits?• HSBC (Main A/C)
• Halifax Back up A/C
• Lloyds (Spending) A/C
• RBS Back up A/C
• Barclays Old A/C
• Nationwide Old A/C0 -
Amex are known for good limits. £10k minimum from people I've known if you've got a good income & history
I applied for HSBC for a laugh, unsurprisingly it was declined. I'm rated at 5/10 chance of getting M&S card though, which uses the same ancient HSBC app system. I applied a few weeks ago and was turned down, will try in October when Bankruptcy is 4 years old and I've had my new job a while.
I applied for HSBC Current Account. To my shock it said £3.5k overdraft, but I picked zero. It then referred and wanted me to go into branch with ID, which I did 2 weeks ago... nothing since! I'm assuming it's been declined - but know they aren't the quickest at moving things along!0 -
