Toddlers nappy leaks in night

Hi

Odd one and wasn't sure where to post it.

My 18 month year old seems to wake up recently with a nappy that seems to have leaked as is the nappy can't take all the pee. It usually means the bed, and clothes are wet. I wasn't sure if I was putting it on right or the nappy was strong enough.

I've tried all the different brands from pampers to Naty to aldi and all in between.

I've tried to give her milk a bit before she goes to bed but she won't settle until she has milk just before bed....seems to soothe and calm her.

Any tips?

Thanks

Is she going to bed in pull ups or nappies? Pull ups aren't as absorbent so even if she is using those during the day, you'd be better switching to old fashioned nappies at night. Is she wearing the right size? A nappy which is too small or too big will leak.

If she's a heavy wetter, you may need to boost the nappy with another absorbent pad, or cover it with a waterproof layer such as the kind of wraps you use with real nappies.

Finally, you could try changing her again just before you go to bed if she is a heavy sleeper and likely to sleep through this or to go back to sleep quickly if she wakes.

Could you stealth change her when you go to bed? If you're prepared you could whip it off and put a new one on in seconds. Easier if it's a pull up? Worth a go?

Have you tried giving her water rather than milk. She may be less inclined to drink as much.

You could start by watering the milk down, increasing the water content gradually.

We use pampers pull ups size 6 with our 2 year old and it's really full in the morning but doesn't leak (unless he's had a few bottles of milk in the night). Does your daughter wake up in the night for milk, if so change her at the same time.

What size is she wearing? The + ranges are more absorbant which is good for night time, so 4+ is the same size as size 4 but more absorbant.

Some people prefer Pampers for the absorbancy and you can just use them for nights if you're happy with a cheaper brand in the day.

To stop clothes and bedding getting wet you could buy a waterproof wrap that is designed to go over cloth nappies. You could also place a cloth nappy booster insert between the wrap and the nappy which is designed to absorb wee. They can be microfiber, cotton, hemp, etc.

  • Pull ups just don't do the job overnight

DGD likes a warm bottle at night and I put a nappy on her. She's 3 end of sept and is getting toilet trained and does well during the day, but nights ATM it's still a nappy

You could try putting 2 nappies on her. My daughter had the same problem and used to "double wrap" her little one.

My son used to have this problem. We then went up a size (reading the size guide on the packet he should've been too small for them), went for the + absorbency, and hasn't leaked since. The nappies fit him well too, didn't appear massive on him. It's definitely worth a shot.

With Pampers are you using the '+' ones? A lot of people mistakenly think the + is to do with the size but it actually means that they are extra absorbent, i.e for night time use.

The one's you want for maximum absorbency will be Pampers Baby Dry +.

Also, are you sure the nappy is actually absorbing the pee and become over full? It takes a LOT of pee to fill a nappy up to the point where it leaks or can no longer absorb, much more than most children can produce.

It may be that the problem is actually the pee is leaking out of the leg seams in which case the nappy may actually be too large and there is a gap.

It's been a while since I used nappies but aren't there special night-time ones that are extra absorbent? From my memories the Pampers nappies could hold a huge amount of fluid, so I'd say that perhaps the ones you are using are too small or are the "daytime" variety.

Another thing you could try is sneakily changing the nappy when you go to bed.
