I can't comment on the Alcatel but I've used the Moto E and it's a nice phone.0

New Moto E (from Tesco) due next month around £1000

I have a Samsung Galaxy Core that we bought outright.
I use a talkmobile sim, I was very lucky some years ago to get a rolling contract at £1 a month for 25 mins and 50 texts, I have gone over this once but not by much so do not think I need more than that.
As for internet, I simply hop on wifi wherever I go if I need to. All major Tesco/Sainsbury/Asda have wifi, it is also liberally distributed in our town and is easy to set the phone to simply log on wherever.
You will also find you can access wifi from O2 stores (no need to be on 02) quite easily, there is also wifi in Boots and in Clarks.
I got my smartphone for Christmas and thought I might have to upgrade my contract to use the net when I was out. That simply is not necessary, and I believe wifi will become more accessible as time goes on.What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -
Done a little more searching around since 1st post and have a better understanding now, should have done that before the question but as always I hold great store by what folks here have to say.
Need to take the wifes phone out to some of the rural spots I frequent, just to see if there's any signal at all regardless of being free.
I possibility is that of going with a cheap £7.50 tesco contract. Given the phone mentioned that would give £50 calls data per annum over 2 years taking out the phone cost.
Will give more than I need and as I don't usually give out my mobile No so never need it at home, so we can run any monthly excess allowance off by swapping phones in effect.
Am I missing a cheaper/better low cost tariff from another supplier?0 -

But first see what network people you call most are on as calls between same network phones are free. We and most family are now on GifGaff because of this.
I looked at this, but IIRC, inter-GiffGaff calls are only free if you top up regularly. Like OP, we spend very little on calls, so do not want to be topping up regularly.
We went for delight mobile, which seemed to be offering unconditional free calls, and can top up with only £5. Unfortunately, not mentioned anywhere is that the balance gets wiped after 3 months :-( You can continue to call other delight phones (and 0800 numbers such as 18185) with 0 balance, but I reluctantly decided to top up again just to ensure my number stayed live. I'll probably just donate most of it to charity via text.0 -
If you have BT broadband at home, you get to use the entire network of BT broadband wifi for free. (Or I think you can pay a subscription to BT to make use of this feature ..?)0

Im on a '3 (three)' sim only deal, I pay about £5 every 3 months, the credit never expires so if you only use £5 over the course of a year then thats how much it will be.0
-
Yeah, I got a '3' sim just before discovering delight. If I had known about delight's vanishing-credit feature, I might have stuck with '3' - paying for the calls with OH would probably have cost less than the credit that got stolen. But I don't mind too much topping up then sending the balance to charity. (A Pyrrhic victory...)0

Just a little point for you to bear in mind ..
When you connect to a wifi netowrk that you do not own, you are putting any data that you send through that connection into the hands of whoever owns that network.
Obviously i couldnt see the big players like boots etc after stealing your bank details, but others i would be less inclined to trust.
Also, you do know that the reason these shops offer you free wifi is so that they can track your visits and in some cases, actually monitor your movement around the store..
IIRC Tesco were using this technology to analyse customers routes through their stores, and the points where they happened to stop and browse the most etc
There is no such thing as a free lunch !! (Unless you work for shell, but that is a different story)0 -
If you can actually find any that works whilst out and about.psychic_teabag wrote: »If you have BT broadband at home, you get to use the entire network of BT broadband wifi for free. (Or I think you can pay a subscription to BT to make use of this feature ..?)0
