Had a mobile for 17 years now.

Issued by work.

Retired 10 years back and have shunned all mobile phones since, as I had to pay for them from then on.

So, pay as you go for the last 5 years, used as emergency phone only, and £10-20 is all I spend each year.

Now need new phone/camera as phone still good but camera dead.

Can't figure what you get charged for a phone that has smartphone ability. Calls are clear but what do you get charged for accessing the inter jobby on a say a tesco jobby??

A smartphone can access the internet via either the mobile carrier signal (3G etc), or wifi. Using mobile will cost you for the data you download : for PAYG it might be pennies per Mb, depending on who you are with. But you are under no obligation to do so, and if you access the internet using only wifi, either at home or at public wifi hotspots, it will cost nothing (provided a hacker doesn't steal any passwords if you do mobile banking via a public wifi...)

OP work out what you want a smartphone to do first as you may just need a dumb phone .
My smart phone is used as a GPS tool and if needed a routing tool plus traffic news . Also as a video/ TV player .Internet browsing and a dedicated news feed and a weather feed .There are also a number of rarely used tools like stopwatch calculator camera video recorder sound recorder .
Not forgetting a notepad and ebook reader .

If you're spending less than £10 a month then there is no point getting any sort of contract phone .
This leaves you with the PAYG option phones. In which case a Motorola Moto G 4G LTE for around £99 is more than good enough for everything you're likely going to use it for.

If that's too much spend on a phone. Then a VODAFONE Smart Speed 6 is the best sub £60 you can get apart from the EE kestrel .

+1 for the Moto G, get it from Tesco with a Tesco payg sim.
But first see what network people you call most are on as calls between same network phones are free. We and most family are now on GifGaff because of this.

Looks good but with a 5.7 inch screen? Surely too big for most people to use as a MOBILE phone?

Some useful info, from several posters, thanks.

Internet connection in WIFI hotspots was 1 of my questions, I'll just have to go through the small print, (with tesco at present), to find the actual cost.

Do I actually need a smart phone?, in essence no I suppose not. However standby battery life is minimal on all cheap fold aways I've looked at, plus want to connect into new car electronics.
I keep getting told to get a new phone by the family but they are all on contract so had no idea as to costs.

The phone I was/am looking at is an Alcatel POP 4? does much more than I need I'm guessing, but they all do.

It's not that I made no effort to keep up with technology, after leaving work I made an absolute decision to avoid it, having had most of my working life driven by the phone, chucked my only watch the same day;), but needs must and like everyone else I now don't like being too far away from "civilisation" :beer:

Wifi is either free or paid for .
Free many cafe pub garden centre bus station library have free WiFi.
With your networks Mobile Data turned off you rarely need to pay for internet access .
