Council want to place me in B&B!

Hello,

I have to have a meeting with social services and the housing people next Friday. The general advice given is that they're going to put me into a B&B/hostel because my parents won't keep me until supported accommodation becomes available.

However, B&B isn't suitable for my condition. I have severe MH problems (Psychosis), and I feel that B&B wouldn't be suitable for a number of self explanitory reasons. I also have Fibromalyia and often can't walk up stairs etc, so it'll have to be somewhere with no stairs.

This type of housing isn't suitable, so how can they put me somewhere where my health will deteriorate?

I'm not 18 until late September so social services are helping me as if when that meeting takes place. Can't they insist they put me somewhere ground floor with relatively low noise?

I know it is a lot to ask but I have been doing my research and a lot of councils wouldn't dream of putting someone with severe MH problems into a B&B. I was also under the impression that B&B's weren't allocated to those under 17 (as specified on Shelter's website)

Can I appeal in some way? Time is really running short. I'm not welcome in this family home and I know my parents won't keep me until supporter accommodation becomes available, they've already made this clear.

Thank you so much for your time :o

I'm not an expert on this by any means, but that doesn't sound right to me. I am positive the council owe you a duty of care as you are under 18. Are they looking to place you later in the year I.e after your birthday?
  • Hiya,

No, I think they're saying that once I'm 18 and I've been in B&B for a while, they're putting me into private accommodation.

Again, this doesn't sound correct. I was under the impress that they couldn't put vulnerable people in B&Bs

    Maybe it's because you're under 18 and can't sign a tenancy agreement?
  • NYM, that's true but someone can on your behalf, such as a social worker or parent

I think the public should be glad and grateful that in this country the community will pay for housing people facing homelessness.
  • Miss Samantha, I should bloody well hope so. Enough tax and insurance is paid by workers to ensure some security for those in need. Just because we're better than most with those in need, doesn't mean improvements cannot be made.

I worked my socks off before becoming so ill that I cannot work. If I was still working, I'd rather my money go to the people in need then something else that is seemed ludicrously acceptable to spend money on.

If the Council have offered you B&B after taking into consideration your personal circumstances, I'm not sure there is much that can be done now.

Clearly, it's got to be better than staying where you are.

What kind of accomodation were you hoping for?

Check posters previous posts before investing too much time and energy into this...

    You're only 17
Until 2015 you had to remain in education until 17 and then last year they raised it to 18.
